Is it possible to incorporate maps.google satellite images so you can zoom into Earth?

Any attempts to do anything like this?

Yes, this is called Virtual Textures.

Bob Hegwood has made a document on had to create these. http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/documentation.html Called Virtual Textures for Dummies.

There are alot of VT for Earth. Found at http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/earth.php and for close ups like cities there here http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/earthcloseup.php.

I hope this helps.

Celestia can't use the maps directly. They have to be converted into images that are properly aligned with the polygons on Celestia's speherical objects. Celestia calls collections of such images Virtual Textures or VTs for short.

Several people have created VTs, although the highest resolutions have been done only for certain areas. Search the Forum for VT Addon announcements and visit the Celestia MotherLode at http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/
