Newbie prob with addon

Post #1by Hengchun » 09.04.2005, 14:44

Hi all,
new to the forum and to Celestia...fantastic program. Having some prob getting addons to work. Just downloaded Mars surface map (4K DDS) from celestia motherlode. But not sure where to put this file (no install instructions) and if other mars files need to be deleted or edited. Using Celestia 1.32, OpenGL max txt size is 4096.
thanks for any help.

edit...just found this site
http://www.lepp.cornell.edu/~seb/celest ... tro.html#5
but, unfortunately does not mention dds files. Also does not say whether to delete or change the original Mars jpg files....help!

Welcome,

Well if the texture is called mars.dds then you just have to put it in your textures > hires folder. Then in Celestia hit shift-r to see the 4k DDS...

The method ElChristou mentioned works, but you have always to switch into the highres mode by pressing SHIFT and r and to revert back to normal resolution by pressing r.

If you want to use the "mars.dds" texture as the default texture for mars, there are some ways to to this.
Which one is best, depends a bit on your skills.
Method 1:
a) rename/remove the "mars.*" file in the medres folder (* stands for any picture extension i.e. .jpg, .png). You could for example create a folder called backup in the textures folder and move the file there.
b) copy the "mars.dds" into the medres folder and on the next startup of Celestia you will see the Mars with the new texture.

Method 2: (Changing things in the solarsys.ssc, better make a backup before messing around in that file)
a) just copy the "mars.dds" into the medres folder in the textures directory
b) open the file in an editor (notepad does it already) and search for the mars section.
c) Then in the Mars section find the entry Texture "mars.*", now either copy and paste that line one time and then put a "#" in front of one line (like this:
# Texture "mars.*"
Texture "mars.*")
"#" tells Celestia that this is a comment and thus ignored.
d) change in the second Texture line "mars.*" into "mars.dds" and save the changed solarsys.ssc

On the next startup Mars should have a new texture.

Hi Guckytos,
thanks..I edited the solarsys.ssc file and it worked....BUT, I had to put the file in the textures/medres folder. According to other info I had read, with this new version 1.32 I didnt think I would have to do that, I should have been able to put it in extras/moon/textues/medres....it may have to do with the addon being an older one.
I have another quick question for you (or anyone). Do you have a nice moon map and mars map that you are using? There are so many at the motherlode, hard to know where to start.
My system: Pent 4, 3GHz, 512 RAM, XP home, Nvidia 6200 128 ram. OpenGL 4k max. text size.

Hi Randy,

no i think it is still the same with the standard textures for solar system objects like Mars in 1.3.2. AFAIK you have to put them into the Celestia\textures\*res subfolders.
Indeed i do have a nice moon and Mars map, but at the moment i am at work and thus don't have access to my Celestia ;). And it has been quite some time since i downloaded them (some time before the motherlode went in its current form online), so i don't remember where i got them or what their names are. But when i get home i will have a look and can then perhaps tell you where to find them.

But a good tip for very fine and accurate Maps is the TextureFoundry from t00fri. You can find it here http://www.celestiaproject.net/~t00fri/texfoundry.php4

They are really awesome.

So go on and have fun with Celestia.

Hengchun,
Have you seen any of the forum posts re:Celestia1.4.0pre6?
Your graphics card may support the OpenGL 2.0...if so...your
Celestial reality would include being able to use the directory
stucture you spoke of (extras by the addons "directions"). Can anyone confirm this? 1.4.0pre6 is just so damn cool for so many reasons,
check it out.

Hengchun,

i did have a look at the textures i use and (as i could have already said yesterday) i use not only those of t00fri but also quite a few of Don Edwards.
My earth for example is a 16 k DDS file from Don. Definitly take a look at his work, it is really worth it. He has also some nice Mars maps.

As for the moon: I don't have any clue where i did get mine from. The file is called Moon_clem_color_16k and it is a 16 k DDS map that has been colored a bit. I think this looks better than the other textures i have.

Hope i could help you a bit.
