Overlay textures question

Post #1by ElPelado » 25.06.2003, 16:23

i want to put an alt texture for earth with the political division. i made this code:
AltSurface "Political Map" "Sol/Earth"
{
Texture "earth.*"
NightTexture "earthnight.jpg"
BumpMap "earthbump.*"
BumpHeight 4.5
SpecularColor [ 0.5 0.5 0.55 ]
SpecularPower 25.0
HazeColor [ 1 1 1 ]
HazeDensity 0.3
OverlayTexture "PoliticalCloudMap2k.png"
}

is there a way to change between seeing or not the political map with the key "+"?? if i am seeing the normal texture and i press "+", it should then show the political map, isnt it?
it doesnt, why?

To see the map you must select "Political Map" from the list of alternate surfaces in the "Display Surface" submenu found in the context menu which is displayed when you right-click on the object. The "+" key only toggles between the normal surface and the "Limit of Knowledge" alternate surface.

Yes, although . . .
- it should be all lowercase "limit of knowledge" (sorry about that)
- and, I don't recommend spoofing limit of knowledge surfaces, particularly if you plan on distributing this add-on.

I admit that the context menu isn't as convenient as using the + key to switch textures . . . Any ideas for a better UI? Perhaps a key to cycle between available surfaces on the currently selected object? Not sure how much I like that idea . . . maybe it's just best to wait until scripts can be bound to keys.

I know it's been a long time... but I had the same question you did with a polical overlay map I made - wanting to turn it on and off. The way I got around it was I created two overlays - a normal one (that laid the borders and names OVER my earth map) and a second one with the same name (that was completely empty and let the ENTIRE earth show through).

One went in the hires folder, the other in the medres folder. When switching between resolutions - I would then be switching between the two versions - essentially "turning off" the overlay when I was selecting the empty overlay.

Hope that helps,
