Video of the moon...

Post #1by ElPelado » 02.10.2004, 00:29

I dont know how many of you already know this... but the moon doesnt have the same size in our skyes every day.... and I am not talking about the time of the day when it rises, in wich it looks bigger, but its just an optical effect.
But besides from that optical effect, there is something else: the Moon's orbit is an eliptical orbit, that means, sometimes its closer and sometimes its farther... and to our eyes it is transalted as sometimes its bigger(in its Periapsis) and sometimes smaller(in its Apoapsis)...
I just remembered how accurate Celestia is, and made this video(less than 1.5Mb, needs DivX codec):

You can also see the effect that sometimes let us see the Mare Orientale and sometimes doesnt...

ElPelado...

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for the video. Interesting to note the
differences which become readily apparent in the short time frame of
the movie.

Cool to watch...

Take care, Bob

Well, thanks...
Some time ago I saw an animated gif that showed the same effect but with pictures of the real moon... but I cant find it right now...

PD: If I remember well, the moon was in its closest position to Earth last September 22nd
