Hi,
i'm new to celestia and i hope this isn't a question too silly. I have a problem with celestia. Every object, written as *.3ds, don't show on my box. I've already updated imlib to 1.9.10-497 and i use lib3ds, -devel 1.2.0-0 to fix that problem, but it don't helps. Someone can help?
System:
K6-2 400, GF2 MX (i know: outdated, but the "rest" of celestia works great)
Linux Suse 8.1, Kernel 2.4.21, nVidia driver 4496
Celestia: 1.3.1-1.SuSE_8.x, celestia-kde-textures: 1.3.1-1.SuSE_8.x
ps: Let me say thanks to all the people, who are involved in that project. Thanks to their great work and thanks to the philosophy, to keep this projekt as freeware! But there has to be one point of critic too. I red more than 80 pages of the forum the last 2 days *ufffff*. Google gives me also 1 day to read. But as a newbie, it's hard to find a solution of a problem, like i have. So, why don't anyone writes a how-to or beginners faq. In my opinion, there must be three, for each OS (Win, Mac, Linux) one.
Special thanks to steffens, who always remembers the Linux users and to Adirondack for his german manual

3ds files with Linux (Suse 8.1)
Re: 3ds files with Linux (Suse 8.1)
Hello testi,
hmmm, should work.
I also have a GF2 MX 64MB. Celestia 1.3.1 worked fine with nVidia 4496 and SuSE 7.3,
but I upgraded a bunch of packages to actual versions compiling from source, e.g.
KDE 3.2, gcc3, gdk/gtk, etc... too many to remember any details...
A few days ago I switched to SuSE 9.1 and nVidia 61.11 because I had problems with
Celestia 1.3.2pre-something.

It's not clear what exactly doesn't work - what did you do to install these files? Do the default spacecrafts (like ISS) work? Did you enable spacecraft rendering in the config options?

Hi,
thx for the answers. First of all, the last question about *.3ds was a silly one from me, forgive me. I had now 2 more days to take a look on celestia, with a short test on a Win box from a friend too.
Ok, here is, what i can see in the solar system with my Suse 8.1:
All planets and moons from Celestia: 1.3.1-1.SuSE_8.x and the spacecrafts Mir, ISS, Hubble and Galileo.
I don't see the rest, that's: Gemini, Skylab, Mars Odyssey, MGS. They are all with a 3ds file in the file system. I also don`t see Apollo 11 and Friendship 7, which have no 3ds file in the system. If i tell celestia to label the spacecrafts then i got the names for all objekts, but still no model for the "don't seen". I know, that i have to set the time to the mission time, but still only names, no objects. Btw, if i set time to "1975" i can see Mir, ISS and Hubble, but only on Linux??
Thanks for answers
