Wow! I just discovered this thread (where have I been??)
Frankly, I am a 56 year old high school teacher in Virginia who taught Earth Science for years to rather bored high school kids. Two years ago, I discovered Celestia. Shortly thereafter, I discovered and joined the forum. Instantly, I was taken into space by this magnificent program and taken into a collaborative world of very interesting people by the folks I have met on this forum. Today, I teach Astronomy primarily, and have transformed my high school. Last week, I just got my numbers for next year. I have over 235 kids who have signed up to take Astronomy with me, in a schedule that has room for only 140 or so. They signed up for my course because of Celestia. I use it extensively to get them into space; to really bring them to the worlds that you guys have created with your genius and knowledge. They LOVE the program. Word about it has gotten around my school, and over 300 kids (to the best of my knowledge) have downloaded it for use at home. I have introduced it to the rest of my school district (it is the 8th largest in the entire U.S.). Soon, kids in all of the district's high schools will be using Celestia.
Although you all may lose interest from time to time, get bored with some discussions, get frustrated with other members of the forum, wish for more challenging things to do with the program ....
PLEASE - don't any of you leave ... or retire. I consider myself very fortunate to be a small contributor to Celestia, and to have excited NASA about the program. I consider myself honored to be associated with all of you via this forum and the Celestia development effort. Squabble as you wish, but never forget what you've created here. Because of US ... humans all over the world have an incredible way to go into space, from their home or classroom ... and see a beautiful and accurate world of the universe ... free and without gimmicks.
Thanks to you all!
Frank
