Why would you consider a room full of many different people to be "problematic" Fridger? I view it as a challenge, in one sense, to locate and participate in the topics of discussion that I am personally interested in. My previous post (and this thread) is a perfect example. I did not know the topic had changed, thus did not continue to read the messages in it.

The "fix" for this particular "problem" is to have an active admin and/or moderators keeping an eye on ALL topics and messages. Chis seems to not have the time necessary to do this -- or to update the forum software itself, which would offer some fixes of it's own.

Another suggestion would be to add a "Feature Requests" forum, since there seem to be MANY from time to time.

Other suggestions?

Sorry Don,

you completely misunderstood my use of the word 'problematics'! It was not meant to refer to your room full of people, but rather to our 'difficult' discussion topic concerned with improvements in the "forum culture"...

Don,

OK, you missed this thread for some reason. Too bad, of course;-). On average, I think the discipline of people is not too bad and the "off-topic drifting rate" moderate. So it appears to me, your argumentation about this point does not relate too much to the core of what this discussion is about.

Did I miss anything here?

Yes, well, I'm probably mostly to blame for the topic drift here, since I made an issue out of Fridger's comments to Daniel. Sorry about that :).

How about I start another thread here with a more relevant subject line...

EDIT: On second thought... I think someone else should start another thread summarising their opinions on the matter. I don't really want to summarise them myself since I'd probably end up getting it wrong :).

Evil Dr.

my advice would be NOT to do that, since this would split off the preceeding discussion material. By now that thread shows so much "activity" that even Newbies will become curious enough to have a look what's going on in here

As I have pointed out before, I am sorry I hit on DanielJ specifically. For me, the type of his posts just served as a "trigger" for the "real thing" that I carried along with me since quite some time...

Just to go really off-topic for ONE MOMENT:

let us take a little fresh breath before going on with our discussion, by enjoying this peaceful landscape and the magical light in the morning of May 22nd in NyAlesund...

I just love that atmosphere and specially saved it from the WEBcam two days ago...

I must admit, it's posts like this that make it hard for me to see where you're coming from, Fridger - you complain that discussion is becoming boring and irrelevant and not directly related to developing Celestia, yet at the same time you post webcam views of the arctic have absolutely nothing to do with Celestia... :?

Evil Dr.,

I guess we are all "multi layered" somehow...I momentarily thought it might be a good idea to inject this image for all of us, to virtually step out into the snow for a moment and "renormalize" ourselves before getting back "to business"...

Was it all that bad?

Bye Fridger

PS: I did complain that the discussions were often boring and irrelevant, but never that they were unrelated to development! That would be far too narrow minded for my taste...

I actually do not believe that the above photo is boring and irrelevant :P

Wow! I just discovered this thread (where have I been??)

Frankly, I am a 56 year old high school teacher in Virginia who taught Earth Science for years to rather bored high school kids. Two years ago, I discovered Celestia. Shortly thereafter, I discovered and joined the forum. Instantly, I was taken into space by this magnificent program and taken into a collaborative world of very interesting people by the folks I have met on this forum. Today, I teach Astronomy primarily, and have transformed my high school. Last week, I just got my numbers for next year. I have over 235 kids who have signed up to take Astronomy with me, in a schedule that has room for only 140 or so. They signed up for my course because of Celestia. I use it extensively to get them into space; to really bring them to the worlds that you guys have created with your genius and knowledge. They LOVE the program. Word about it has gotten around my school, and over 300 kids (to the best of my knowledge) have downloaded it for use at home. I have introduced it to the rest of my school district (it is the 8th largest in the entire U.S.). Soon, kids in all of the district's high schools will be using Celestia.

Although you all may lose interest from time to time, get bored with some discussions, get frustrated with other members of the forum, wish for more challenging things to do with the program .... :) PLEASE - don't any of you leave ... or retire. I consider myself very fortunate to be a small contributor to Celestia, and to have excited NASA about the program. I consider myself honored to be associated with all of you via this forum and the Celestia development effort. Squabble as you wish, but never forget what you've created here. Because of US ... humans all over the world have an incredible way to go into space, from their home or classroom ... and see a beautiful and accurate world of the universe ... free and without gimmicks.

Thanks to you all! :)

Frank

i think that DanielJ posts are a bit odd , BUT put your self in a newcombers shoes . 3 years ago i could only turn on a computer --that was all -- (push the power boutton ) .

Not all ,or for that matter most people , even know how to use this mess of stuf thats called a computer .

MS with windows has made a large part of the world computer illiterate
-point and click - that is all some know

AND YES it can be a bit anoing at times , but as celestia gains pop. there will be more and more new people on the fourm , with little or no comp. exp.

P.S. I might be way off hear but for a long time i have had a suspishion
that DanielJ MIGHT?? be a old times and just having fun with us
Then again i could be wrong .
