When a 3DS object model file includes a surface texture file specification, Celestia only looks in the /medres/ directory. (No directory specification is included in the 3DS object's internal texture file specification, only the file name and type.)
It would be very useful if Celestia looked in all three texture directories just as it does for Body surface texture maps. Of course, it would be best if the r/R commands worked for these 3DS textures, too.

Generalizing this feature request...
To expand on this:
It'd help a lot if many of the features available for planet surface textures could be made available for Nebula objects, too.
An important one is Alternate Surface Textures. Some other way of making sets of Nebulas visible and invisible would be acceptable, too.
I'd like to be able to step through images of a particular object that were taken at various wavelengths, for example.
I have several DSO add-ons that I haven't released just because so many images are involved. There's just no way to make them look "good".
