Locations feature, & 3ds models

Post #1by JackHiggins » 22.07.2003, 20:40

Hope someone can answer these 2 short questions for me-

a) Where can I download the ssc files for surface locations on earth & other bodies? (I'm more interested in other bodies but all would be handy)

b) Is it possible to use a 3ds model with one of these locations, instead of having to use an invisible placeholder?

This feature hasn't been discussed that much in the forum, so that's why I don't know the above... (probably should though)

Thanks!

I am joining to the wishes (if you don't mind Jack ;-) ).
I would like to add 7 wonders of the world on the surface of Earth, or at least a Pyramids or my own house :-)) ...
What am I doing? Ah, nothing much. Just laying on my bed, watching the stars, and sky, and keep asking myself: 'Where the Hell is my Roof?'.

Yup that's what I was looking for thanks!

One thing though- all the locations are marked as "other locations" in the dialog box in celestia- even though some are cities some are observatories etc... Are there any locations ssc files with these details included?

Also does anybody know if there are any similar ssc files for locations on other bodies?

In the file for the Neptune moons, the sizes are all 0. When I tried to see the labels in Celestia, I could not see any on Trition and didn't see the one label on Proteus. So how were the sizes for the locations on the other planets and moons determined?
Also, with the two locations ssc files available for the earth, some locations that really should be there are not there and there are some in my area that I don't recognize. So are there any lists of coordinates out there that I could make another file with? And how do I tell Celestia about the type of locations like cities and observatories?
I am using 1.3.1 prerelease 6.

That's brilliant thanks! Now-

Earlier I wrote:b) Is it possible to use a 3ds model with one of these locations, instead of having to use an invisible placeholder?

So is it possible or will I have to continue using an invisible placeholder to position 3ds models on the surface?

I'm interested too.
This request is already in my feature request list.
I've already submitted to Fridger a similar request in another thread.
He answered that the work is in progress.
I'm waiting for news by the development team.

they are text location of place on a planet.

the Earth locations has the location of all the major citys around the world

1: download the locations file you want
2: put the ssc file into the extras directory
3: run Celestia and goto the planet of the location file you downloaded
4: turn on the locations with the "&" key (shift 7)
5: move close enough to the planet to be able to see the Location labels.

I don't think so... But at the moment EVERY location is marked as "other location" and turning on/off maria, terrae, etc has no effect. How do you actually define a location AS a terra or maria, in the ssc file? Maybe the other locations are different colours, but i don't know because I can't actually see them..
