I took that 23,040 x 11,520 Pixels seperate R,G,B files and combined
them into a .jpg that will work on people's systems like mine that has
one of the older 32meg TNT cards. It's a 2048X1024. It's unfortunate
I can't see bump-mapping with my card - I guess I wait for my next
system.

Yes, on my system it slows down the works too much to be enjoyable. I
did make the 4096 first and it sucked. (Viper770 32mb 450Mhz dual cpu)
And I can't use dds with my card - doesn't support it. I guess.

You'll notice though that that new texture is 180 offset from the old one - it's a better texture (colour-wise etc it matches the MGS photos better) but it will result in celestia showing the day side as a night side and vise versa. Does anyone know the proper line to tweak in the ssc file to correct for this?
I've done a swap to correct (ie chopped up the texture + reassembled it to re-align the hemispheres), but now there's a faint dark line running down the middle of it which is a bit annoying.

You know it didn't look right to me either. I'll check this out later today,
shift the image, and put it back up, except -- won't the same problem
appear on the other side when half a mars day goes by?

To fix this, add the line:
RotationOffset 180
to the entry for Mars in solarsys.ssc
