Sticky Linux-How to & FAQ Thread request !

hi,
as above, I found it since that Linux version of Celestia is up and under developement as the windows version, and since there are many Linux users or new-bees need some help in installing Celestia , and the majority has the same common problem, its installing and configuring the system to make Celestia run, that means:
*how to install nvidia(or other drivers, ati?) drivers, the whole process.
*how to install celestia
*how to ...
it will be very helpful posting such a sticky thread, this request is meant for site admins, hope they can hear that :D
-----------
last but not least, my proposed how to install nvidia drivers:
*exiting and terminating X-Window to text mode only console,
*cd to the folder where nvidia drivers are, doing:

Code: Select all

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-xxxx.run

as xxxx is the number of the detonator version
*edit this file# /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(I use mc = midnight commander, to navigate in the console mode, and to edit files using F4, I guess its the easiest way at least for me)
**in the section "module" remove:

Code: Select all

Load "dri"
Load "Glcore"

add:

Code: Select all

Load "glx"

in the section "driver"

Code: Select all

Driver "nv"

replace "nv" with "nvidia"
*edit this file# /etc/modutils/aliases
**add the line:

Code: Select all

alias char-major-195 nvidia

*execute#

Code: Select all

update-modules

reboot, and I guess everything is done!
-----------------------------------------------
please correct me if Im wrong?

Well, that's all in the nvidia driver's README.txt. It is sometimes worth to read the manufacturer's Documentation...

It would be a good idea to add a 'Linux Section' to the Celestia FAQ, covering it from a wider angle, with things as how to retrieve from the CVS server, how to configure&compile, and so on (I haven't read the FAQ fow a while, so it could be there already).

jamarsa,

You might want to consider starting a "Celestia on Linux" FAQ yourself. That's probably the best way to ensure it includes the items you think are important. The original Celestia FAQ that Chris wrote hasn't been updated in a while. He's been working on more important things ;)

Hmm, I was thinking this week about it as my little contribution, but I feel the need to strengthen some weak points in my knowledge before I could make a good job. I'll make a few more tests and gather all the information in this forum before starting. I'll try as soon as possible.

Other project I want to do is the translation of Celestia Documentation to Spanish.

That's not fair, you know.. There is a lot of people with more knowledge and history here helping people to run Celestia in Linux (Christophe and Fridger at the front of them). I help here as much as I can because this is one of the best comunities I've ever found.
