New Halley's Comet, 5535 Annefrank, Puck & Larissa model

Post #1by JackHiggins » 07.05.2003, 20:03

Hey all

I KNOW I said that Nozomi would be my last model for a while, but I had a 4-day weekend with lots of spare time!! Anyway, here are some more new models, of the Nucleus of Halley's Comet, Asteroid 5535 Annefrank, Puck (Uranus) and Larissa (Neptune).

Halley zip is just a .3ds file, but Annefrank, Puck & Larissa come with .ssc files to position them correctly for Voyager 2 and Stardust flybys.

Download from http://homepage.eircom.net/~jackhiggins/celestia/ but look at the screenshots first:

Hello Jack
Just downloaded them and not being too critical, I think all barring the Annefrank model should be smoothed out if possible?
Especially the craters and indentations on Puck and Larissa where even your pictures above show them to have a blocky 'Atari' like appearance in places!
It would be great if you could get them as smooth as your excellent Braille model.

Regards

TERRIER,

praesepe has agreed to smooth out all the asteroid & moon models for me (including Jupiters minor moons that I posted a while back). The blockyness is an anim8or problem; it makes evrything shiny when it exports to .3ds & i don't know how to stop this- there may be no way to stop it using that program.

He says that he'll have them done in a few days so i'll put the whole lot up online then.

Be patient!

Ok hey everybody-

All the new models are up. Thanks praesepe!! :D

http://homepage.eircom.net/~jackhiggins/celestia/

I haven't had time to do any new screenshots, but believe me they look much, much better now. There is also a highly updated Thebe model, reflecting how it actually looks in real life. (The old Thebe model was pure &%*? really!!)

Just to remind everyone, the updated (smoothed & non-shiny) models are:

    Jupiter:
    -Adrastea
    -Metis
    -Thebe

    Uranus:
    -Puck

    Neptune:
    -Larissa

    Other:
    -Halley
    -Annefrank
    -Braille

Enjoy!!!

P.S. Hope you like the very slight change of design on my site. (Yes, a new font :D )

Oh, one other thing:

I had a few small problems while uploading, so if you download a zip that doesn't work properly, tell me about it & i'll fix it. I'm pretty sure they're all ok though.

Ok- you may have noticed the above pictures have changed- i've put up screenshots of all the new models so you can check them out before you download, if you want.

This is the new Thebe model, for anyone who hasn't seen it already:

Fantastic !!!

The craters and indentations on Puck and Larissa look superb now.

Its seems a shame to get rid of the old shiny Braille model though, perhaps I could position it somewhere on Earth as a statue!!! ;-)

Jack
Whilst on the subject, I've downloaded anim8tor out of curiosity, and imported into it the shiny Braille model and found that by opening the Material Editor it had a specular value of 0.2, whereas 0 would get rid of the shine. Is this value of 0.2 being automatically imposed on your models when you export them to 3ds?

they weren't! remember, praesepe smoothed & de-shined them with 3ds max!

Yup, thats it... is there any way to manually change this through notepad or something, without messing up the whole file? I've had a few bad experiences doing this type of thing before...

I haven't tried fixing it after importing a 3DS model, but while you're editing a model in Anim8or you can change any of the half-dozen different surface properties on the "Material Editor" page.

Yes, i know that, but when I export to 3ds using anim8or no matter what settings you use for specularity (which is the relevant one for this problem) you can't get it to look like it does using 3ds max... it always exports to 3ds with a shine & except for manually text editing the .3ds file, theres no way to stop it..

(I'm not going to get 3ds max unless i can get it free- way too expensive for somthing like this)

I've only had anim8or for a day so I'm probably getting things wrong, but I've tried altering the Material Editor settings for the shiny Braille model to what I feel are the most relevent for getting rid of the shine, ie the SPECULAR, ROUGHNESS and BRILLIANCE, and giving them the values of 0, 1 and 1 respectively.
The texture in Anim8or now looks dull and flat!
I applied them and exported the model to 3D studio(3ds).
After putting the 'new' model into CELESTIA and changing the SSC file, when viewing it - sure enough there is that shiny model again!
However when importing this model back into anim8or the model looks dull and flat again, and the settings have remained at the new values.

I can see the problem now Jack, but I wonder if it can be solved?
