Bad News - New 124 Exe crashes...

I hate to tell you this, Chris, but the new exe crashes everytime I
start Celestia. It's about to get to IO (default start-up), and crashes
just before IO would appear in normal start-up. So I guess for now,
I'll have to stick to the previous 124 exe.

Hope you find the problem.

Ugh.

Perhaps Io was eclipsed by Jupiter and this is just the eclipse/ring shadow problem again? If you could, try hitting ESC right away so you don't go to Io and checking out some other planet or moon instead. Venus is usually pretty safe :>

Chris -

I actually was able to press esc and stop it from crashing right off
the bat, BUT, any goto to any planet makes it crash - seemingly just
as the planet is about to show up at the end of a goto.

BTW, I only downloaded the exe. Are you sure there's not an
imcompatibility problem with earlier 123/4 .ssc files or whatever?

Like you said - ugh...

124 crashing...

In fact, Celestia is crashing upon going to any object, including
any star. BTW, I have eclipses turned Off; stars as points turned On, if
that helps figure this out.

Chris - if there's anything I can do to help debug this problem, please
let me know. I would hate to be left in the dust.

Its the stars as points...Luckily I had that off when I installed the new EXE so my suggestion would be to reinstall old...turn off stars as points and install the new EXE then it will work...as far as the cms models...They are no longer crashing the program...I will report any more as I come across them!

Chris also on galaxies...go here to read >> http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=323 << I was wondering the abbreviations you have programmed in for galactic models?

Also I found this out by opening the rendering menu and clicking on the stars as points option...It gave me the Illegal Operation call...Then I tried it again to get what Invalid page fault sector it was and the damned thing wouldnt crash again lol...Murphy's Law I guess...

Anyway as soon as it crashes again...I'll post that log, if it helps any...
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

That was it - stars at points. I'm glad it's working now, but I sure
liked pointy stars rather than the blotchy ones. I hope this is just a
bug that will be fixed.

Thanks!

The wierd thing Vic, is the fact that when I run it now with stars as points it will not crash...so maybe it had to do with some kind of configuration glitch on first install....

I'll let Chris figure this one out...

You're right. Now, the latest version doesn't crash with stars as points on.
Looks like there is some compatibility problem with the old config that
gets fixed once you get the software running and close it cleanly.

Bizarre.

Rassilon and Vic: thanks for tracking this one down . . . I'll see if I can figure out the configuration problems.

So does this fix anyone's problems with ringed planets?

By the way, Chris and Ras, I notice a slight but quantifiable slow down
in screen refresh (fps) in this new 124 version. Does that sound right?
Moving through the stars is slightly more jittery.

I also have been meaning to mention that - did you know you can move
in or out by holding down BOTH mouse buttons and dragging? It's been
this way since I got involved with Celestia v121/2.
