By cons, Titan (1,222,000 km) around Saturn is in the right distance ... :)

Tell us what is the distance of your moon :?:
Saw the shadow on the giant, I'm afraid ... :(
Sir, no offense, but I am finding you to be increasingly annoying. I have little patience with those trying to cramp my style, and even less if they happen to be real world scientists (I'm looking at you Einstein and DeGrasse). Please, knock it off.

On topic, Kepler-16b is defined in extrasolar.ssc as having a radius of 52500 km, and a mass of 110 Earths (0.333 Jupiters). The moon I posted, Darity, has a radius of 5140.8212 km, and orbits b at a distance of 233502.0 km, with a period of 1.2392 days.

Yeah, it is a bit close, as in real life, Darity would be a barren, volcanic dystopia, but as I said, I don't like reality cramping my style. ;)

Personally, I prefer to use a rule of thumb where, when creating moons around planets, anything with an orbital period of less than one Earth day is inside the roche limit, and is thus most likely limited to a max radius of about 100 km, assuming said moon's guts are strong enough to keep it together. ;)
Hungry4info wrote:You could have also mentioned that Kepler-16 (AB)b is too close to the star(s) to be habitable.

But this is a fictional creation.
I thought it was the other way around, meaning b was a bit too far from the two suns to be in the habitable zone? I heard that since that might be the case, any large enough moon around b could hypothetically be warmed up enough by tidal interactions with b to be able to support advanced complex life at decent temperatures in spite of the greater-than-desired distance from the two suns?

PlutonianEmpire,

thanks for this information. I now placed J.T.K. into my annoying users list, and he's completely gone from the forum ! Great feature !

EDIT : hmmm, this gives me the idea to remove all the Star Trek discussions/topics/users too. I'm not sure I'll do it yet.

Oops, I deleted that post. My apologies.

tl;dr, Add abusive/annoying users to the "foes" list, it'll ignore them. :D

EDIT: Recovered it, thanks to the almighty "Back" button. :D

As far as I know, this forum does have an "ignore" feature, which with this hoster/software, is called the "foes" list. I tried it on another website with the same forum hoster/software, and it worked pretty much the exact same way as an ignore feature. Using it will hide all posts by whatever username you put into it, but you'll be able to click a link on that post if you want to see it anyway. It also blocks them from sending you private messages, IIRC, but only on certain forums.

Hope this helps. :)

Seconded! First time I've ever used this feature lol. Excellent way to improve the S/N of this forum.

I think that depends on whether the user who made the post you're quoting decided to use the "place inline" feature for the attachments.

Anyways...

Oh, and the system is clear on the other side of the Milky Way, in the outer fringes of the galactic disk; so the lack of background stars prompted me to insert a generic starfield I made with Celestia.

My, my...I'm gone for a bit and things get a little nasty! On the other hand, I'm flattered you like at least some of my work, Massimo. Thank you for bringing Wilbur to my attention. Here's another view of a world called Srira Viti, which orbits the third planet of Tegmine A...

Thank you. I've been slowly reworking the Tegmine A system, hopefully for a re-release. The first version got panned, and in retrospect, deservedly so. There's a super-earth in the system that needs help, plus the other moons could use original textures as well.

Here's one I made with a color-inverted Gobi Desert satellite shot....

What if....

Mars had been bigger? Would it have been able to have a better chance at supporting life?

Would it...

Would it have developed a civilization at the same time Earth did?
alternate_mars2.jpg

Would...

Would Phobos and Deimos have been any different?

My own take on the apparent supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, at the center of the MW, using Cham's wonderful sprites models. :)

Well, the more massive Phobos is, the greater the tides it will raise on Mars, and the more it will hasten it's demise. *ducks and runs*

Very nice images though :) It is good entertainment for thought to wonder about how Mars could have been different.

Just lower the eccentricity. Demise (mostly) averted. ;)

And thanks. :)

Lowering the eccentricity won't help, as long as Phobos orbits within the synchronous orbit radius. With the tidal bulge lagging behind the sub-Phobos point on Mars, the gravity of that bulge will pull Phobos against the orbital velocity vector, causing its orbit to decay, even for zero eccentricity. You could maybe raise the semi-major axis though.

Yeah, that's what I had already done when I made the screenshots. :P

Phobos' new orbit is slightly less than 6 days, and Deimos' is 26 and a half.

It'll still make for an interesting tidal experience, to say the least. :P
