Cannot Create Movie

Hi,

I did a board search for this issue built couldn't find a thread dealing with it. Celestia runs really well on my system and whilst I can capture jpegs, I cannot capture a movie. When I try I get the error message "could not capture movie". I was wondering if anyone has an insight into what issues might generate this error.

My vid card is a RADEON 9200 SERIES 128.00 MB. The program works well other than this issue. I was thinking perhaps a codec issue but I don't know.

[edit: I should have added my OS is XP Pro SP2. I ran the program "Dependency Walker" and it looks like it may be an issue with unbounded .dlls and therefore corruption in my OS. In which case, you can probably ignore this message]

In another post made recently, it was pointed out that the default Windows OpenGL drivers are corrupt, and that you'd do better downloading and installing the OpenGL drivers provided by your graphics card manufacturer. You might want to give that a try?

XP has had a SP3 available for a while now. Maybe you should use Windows Update to update to SP3. Did you ever update Windows Media Player ? Sometimes an update here will update codecs. Is your card using a recent / up to date driver?

I installed SP3 today, actually, and it didn't make any difference. I have Windows Media Player 11, and frankly wish I hadn't installed that as I've had player and codec issues ever since. I might go back to an older version of WMP and see what effect that has.

When you try to capture a movie, what codec are you using? There should be many (whatever your system has) available so you could try different ones. I can't remember how it's done exactly but it wasn't that hard to choose a codec to encode the clip.

Pardon my ignorance, but I have no idea how to answer your question. I have the K-Lite codec pack installed. I presume Celestia simply looks for the codec it requires to capture a movie.

When you start to capture a movie or clip (either File => Capture Movie/Video or Shift + f10), a window is displayed that asks for the file name. This window also has settings for the window size and frame rate. After you choose the file name a second window appears. There is a section that says "compressor" on that window that should have a drop down menu that is activated by clicking on the right side of the area. This drop down menu should list the available codecs on your system. My system brought up "Uncompressed Raw" by default but I had many others in the drop down menu. Try choosing a different codec from that menu and see if it works.

Could he perhaps try DivX? I know it's a free download, I've used it in the past (before going Linux). http://www.divx.com/
