Forum Guidelines

Post #1by selden » 09.11.2004, 00:43

Here are some posting guidelines for the Celestia Forums.

Both guests and registrants are expected to follow these guidelines.

Down at the bottom, I've included a copy of the "Registration Agreement Terms" in case you haven't seen them or have forgotten what they include.

Please:
=====

+1 Register with the Forum so you can login.

You don't have to provide any personal information, not even your real name. When you login, though, you'll be able to edit your posts and people who respond will know that they're answering the same person. See Note #1 below.

Clarification added 3-Oct-2006:
| Registration is required in order to post
| messages to the Celestia Forum.

+2 Discuss Celestia!

+3 Be polite to one another.

It's easy to misunderstand what people have written. The primary language used on the Celestia Web forum is English. However, many people who use the Forum do not read or write English very well, especially when it's not their native language.

If someone's posting upsets you, ask if they meant what you think they wrote. Usually, you'll find that they intended something quite different.

Clarification added 3-Oct-2006:
| See also -6 below.

+4 Give credit when you post someone else's artwork, Addon, or writings which you have modified.

+5 Have fun!

Please do not:
=========

-1 Post messages with illegal content.
See Note #2 below.

-2 Post messages that people would find offensive or inflammatory.

Messages that include opinions about politics, religion, sex and similar controversial topics are inappropriate for this forum.

-3 Post "Adult" messages or pictures.
Pornography belongs elsewhere.

-4 Post advertisements for commercial products.
This includes SPAM.

-5 Post messages which invade people's privacy.

For example, if someone has not revealed to the Forum who they are, then you must not do so either. Just because information about them may be available somewhere on the Web does not mean that they would like you mentioning it here.

-6 Respond publicly to inappropriate postings.

If you think someone has posted something inappropriate, please discuss it with them privately or report it to a moderator. Do not reply to them in the Forum.

Clarification added (and clarified) 3-Oct-2006:
| Among other things, this means that you should not write on this Forum
| about the personal failings of people who post to the Forum.
| The Celestia Web Forum is for discussing Celestia.
| The Forum is not for arguing with or about people
| who do not meet with your approval.

Consequences for violating these guidelines:
=============================

-- Forum moderators may lock, edit or delete postings which violate these guidelines, usually with an explanation why.

-- People who persistently violate these guidelines may not be allowed to use the Forum again.

-- If illegal activities are involved, appropriate authorities may be notified.

Notes:
====

The Celestia Web Forum is hosted in the Russian Federation.
As a result, it must comply with the laws of Russia.

The above no longer applies since the website was moved to Fosshost in mid-2020.

Note #1, a Privacy statement:

We want Celestia and discussions about it to be available to everyone who is interested, no matter what their age might be. As a result, no personally identifiable information is required when registering.

However, the forum software does log the IP address associated with your system, and it may store "cookies" on your computer so it can determine which postings belong to you.

Information which you have provided voluntarily will not intentionally be provided to others without your permission, except when required by law. There are several places on your Profile page where you provide this permission.

Note #2:

Illegal content includes, but is not limited to, threats; libel; copyrighted material that is not yours; passwords for "cracking" software; advocating criminal acts, and other items too numerous to mention here.

Note #3:

Don't forget that the Celestia Forum is a public discussion group. Its contents are not private. It is read by many more people than those who take the time to write. Your words may have more influence than you expect.

Because of recent events there are a few additional rules that are now added to the forum:

1. No sockpuppets allowed, anyone suspected to use one or be one will be banned permanently after 1 warning.

2. Only posting of pictures allowed in the Subforum "Celestia Users" that meet the following criteria:
  • high polygon count and details of the model
  • pictures shall show more than a black background with the model
  • if they are low polygon models, they must be original models created by yourself and NOT be from any SciFi series
  • If a model or surface texture that you show is based on someone else's work, remember that they own the copyright to it, you do not. You must provide full attribution: who created the original design, picture or model, where you obtained the design, picture or model (the complete URL or other details), and that you have the creator's permission to use the design, picture or model and to display images of it.
  • If you created the model or surface texture, you must so state.

Forbidden pictures are:
  • pictures with low polygon models of any kind of SciFi series
  • a model before a black background only
  • models or surface textures without full attribution

Anyone found breaching the above rules a certain amount of times will face consequences.

The things listed under point 2 are only a rough guideline at the moment and can or will be changed if there is a good reason provided. Changes can be proposed by forum members.

Update as of 2021 due to this being a problem in the past and as a preventative measure, do not necromance posts unless you are the original poster. Only exception to this rule is if the post contains something "meaningful" that warrants then thread being revived.

pedro_jg wrote:Do not bump old topics (a.k.a. necromancing) if they didn't receive new replies for over a year [or whatever time period], unless:
1. You are the original poster of the topic;
2. You state clearly in your post its reason, showing why it wouldn't be better as a thread of its own
