Phew! I should have checked. But either way, I guess we shared some sensitive info that some hackers desire by accident?

In fact I still cant imagine, what China may hope to achieve by ddos attack, except temporary disabling a service. But I remember other such an attacks on other forums I used. Maybe it's just "cracker practices". Random testing of carious sites or indirect pushes on other organisations. I remember there were lots of various attacks from Russia, directed into many Euripean and American sites and services. Reason? Never strictely obvious.
Still formally developer, but too tired to develop. I feel sad, but Celestia is going forward despite it.

It's worth remembering that the source of an internet attack being in "Country X" does not mean it was done with the consent or knowledge of "Country X." I had someone try to hack into my e-mail account from Hunan province a few years ago. It doesn't mean the People's Republic of China, or the Hunan provincial government is attempting to read my e-mails.

We have no reason to think the Celestia Forums forum was the victim of a State-sponsored attack. As you rightly point out, it's not clear what the motive would be.

It's most likely the Chinese government.
No need at all. Even if the Chinese government does anything, it will just throw Celestia out of GFW, just like YouTube and Google, to make Chinese users only can visit with VPN. Some people with ulterior motives will use Chinese computers to make puppet machines. Some time ago, SpaceEngine website was also attacked by similar DDoS attacks. The IP address also came from China, but in fact, it was not made in China at all.

very true, gladly I don't have to use VPN with celestia.space or github.com now. while I believe there might have been attacks led by the gov, I don't think celestia.space is worth attacking anyway...
