Is there any way i can get 1.6.1 to render things as far out as M87 or farther
?
if so, what do i edit/modify in the files to force celestia to render stars and planets that far out on 1.6.1?

You can't, that is 1.7.0 only.

You would have to modify the source code and recompile Celestia.

I don't recommend doing it at all. It's much easier to set up Celestia 1.7, as described in the thread I linked.

how do i back up my files so i can add them to 1.7 because during the time my 1.6.1 broke and i had to reinstall it and i backed up my files those got messed up, like it replaced my textures with the junky default ones, and deleted lots of my addons in the backup files (i put my backups in a different location from where i installed celestia
(i put my backups on my desktop at the time it happened)
this happened months months ago, i recovered from that a while ago

Just put 1.7 in a different folder than the one you use for 1.6.

I don't know. That certainly shouldn't happen.

Yes, I have more than two Celestia installs and have never had any issues like what you described.

Multiple Celestia installs can coexist provided they are installed to different folders.

so they shouldn't mess with each other textures, addons, and other data files as long there not in the same spot?

so what do you think caused the 1.6.1 reinstall to fix a issue to mess up my backup files which was not in the same location as where i was installing the new 1.6.1 into?
