Hope I'm not breaking any rules but I'm going to answer my own question. I was going to ask how to get rid of irritating red arrows appearing around the selected object, however by the time I got my forum account I had found that they were called "markers" and you can toggle them using the Render| View Options menu or using the hotkey CTRL+K. I couldn't find any reference to red arrows in the documentation or FAQ and I missed the CTRL+K entry in the help | Controls dialogue as I didn't know they were "markers". I also found they are quite useful when your selected object in nearly invisible and you know how to get rid of them afterwards. Hope this helps someone else.
