Solar System Browser Problems

Bertrand, (bdfd) has given me two new add-ons for the Motherlode, but with either
add-on, I cannot find any Solar System Browser objects within the selected star's
vicinity. Has anyone any idea as to what the problem might be?

Bertrand has submitted many add-ons in the past, and they all worked fine.
The only thing *I* can think of is that something is different (or wrong) with
either the STC files, the SSC files, or both.

Does anyone have any idea where we might start looking for a solution to
this problem?

I honestly have no idea. I have tested each of Bertrand's add-ons in both
Celestia 1.5.1 and the latest SVN version of RC2. They both
show the same results. I can use the ENTER-Type Name-ENTER method
to get to any of the objects in his add-on's solar system, but can find
nothing in the Solar System Browser under the Navigation panel.

Has anyone any clue as to what we might check here?

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Strange.

It works fine for me.

I have to believe that it might be due to some "non printing" characters in the SSC catalog which were eliminated in the process of pasting it into the forum post.

Works fine for me as well Bob.

One question though... how have you named the .STC and .SSC files.
Celestia is sometimes sensitive to the location and collation order of filenames when parsing them.
ie. A.ssc may be loading prior to B.stc.

I don't know if this is the cause of your problem, but it might be worth experimenting with your filenames.

Where are you folks getting this add-on from?
The two versions I'm testing came from the Sandbox at the ML?

Are these the ones you are using?
If so, then the problem exists at my end. And also at Ulrich's because he
gets the same problem.

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Bob,

I just cut and pasted the code from your second post.

I assumed this was one of the ones you were having problems with.

Okay, un-installed *everything* related to Celestia from my computer,
and then installed an absolutely clean copy of 1.6.0RC2...

Now, Bertrand's add-ons work perfectly.

Beats the hell out of me.

Thanks for the assist guys. Much appreciated by the Brain-Dead

Yes, I know it does.
But, you were seeing some of the same problems I was this time.
I really don't want to do this again. <sigh>

So how does one fix this problem?
I have the same problem with my Mira addon.
I use the enter-type-enter method for going to MiraA, and I see the planets in the Solar System Browser. I type in MiraB, go to the Solar System Browser, and still only see the planets for MiraA.
I saw above the "naming" observation, so I changed the name of my stc file from Mira.stc to MiraAB.stc. The scc files are named MiraA.scc and MiraB.scc.
Any directions you guys can give would be great.

Thanks,
Tim

Tim,

Can you provide the text of your SSC and STC files?
If they're large, you could attach them in a zip file.

(Models and textures aren't needed to debug this type or problem)

It looks like a bug in Celestia to me.

Just so I get this right.
You're saying I need to make 2 stc files?
I did find the RA and DEC for Mira A and B over at the Simbad site, but it gives 4 different coordinats. I am assuming I would use the "ICRS coord. (ep=2000)".

Thanks,
Tim

While working on this problem, I have found a discrepancy.
I looked up Mira on the internet and I find distances of around 420 Ly, while Celestia gives 298 Ly.
Why he big differance?

Thanks,
Tim

The most recent version of the Celestia database is based on the 2007 revision of the Hipparcos catalogue by van Leeuwen, while SIMBAD itself quotes the distance from the original Hipparcos catalogue version by Perryman et al. (1997). The data can be retrieved from VizieR

HIP1 data: parallax = 7.79±1.07 mas (distance = 419±58 ly)
HIP2 data: parallax = 10.91±1.22 mas (distance = 299±33 ly)

I remember posting this problem a year ago or so. This happens in any binary or multiple star system that has worlds orbiting each star. Only the planets orbiting the A star show up in the browser.

I figued it out....sorta.
As a work around I made 2 stc files and gave each star its orbital properties.
You can't see the barycenter, or select it, or see its orbit, because there isn't one. You can however see the star's orbits.

Thanks,
Tim
