"View Options" Menu problem

Post #1by marco.ghiri » 23.04.2009, 08:48

I am an enthusiast user of Celestia Software.
I have a problem with Celestia-ED: in the "Render" - "View Options" menu, I can not see
"Dwarf planets", "Moons", "Minor Moons", "Asteroids", "Comets" and "Spacecrafts" boxes on the bottom left of the window.
I installed version 1.5.1 of Celestia-ED (Windows version), the "Educational Base Package" and several Activities as instructed in the help file. I tried also to install the software on a different PC with the same results.
Does someone know how to get out?

Thank you in advance,

Marco.

The options to select Dwarf planets and Minor moons were not added until Celestia v1.6.0.
The Windows installer for Celestia v1.6.0 Release Candidate 1 is available. It is discussed in the topic thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13710

An Edu version of v1.6.0 is not yet available. I suspect it won't be available until after the finalized version of v1.6.0 is released.

Below are screengrabs of the English Render/View Options menu that you should see with V1.5.1 and with V1.6.0.

Thank you very much for your prompt answer!
Just another question... The Educational Activities (for example 3rd and 4th) instruct to select "Dwarf Planets" in the "View Option" Menu.
Are the Activities already updated for Celestia 1.6.0?
Thank you so much,

Marco.

Marco:

The Educational Activities have not yet been updated for Celestia 1.6.0, and will not be until the official version of 1.6.0 is released. However, the current version of Celestia151-ED.exe that is on the motherlode website and is used in all activities on the CD and DVD versions, does include the Dwarf Planets menu item in the Render/View Options menu. Here is a screenshot of it:

render.jpg

The dwarf planets listing is in the lower section on the menu, on the left. That button is what would be clicked upon in Activity 3 and 4. In case the program somehow got corrupted, I have sent a new installation file to the motherlode to replace the one that is there. Give it a few days to be replaced, then download and install it over the one you've got now. Don't uninstall your Celestia151-ED directory since that would remove all the other files you may have in use ... just reinstall this latest installer file into the existing directory. It will overwrite what is there. Then, let me know if you are still not seeing dwarf planets in the render/view options menu.

Frank

Hi Frank,

Thanks for your answer. I will wait for the new uploading of Celestia-ED1.5.1 on the website.
I attach a screenshot of my "View Options" to show you what I see.
I have the suspect that my problem should be caused by using Italian Version of the software. What do you think about?
Thanks again,

Marco.

Marco:

Yes, the Italian version of Celestia151-ED.exe must be an earlier version without the view option dwarf planets field. That would be the problem.

You can edit some of the files in the English version of Celestia so that the text that appears on screen is in Italian. The forum does have some postings somewhere that explain how to do that.

Download the new update in two or three days, and then translate the text to Italian if you wish, or use it in English.

Salve Marco

I see that you managed to have an Italian version of Celestia-ED. It was not so obvious because the files were not at the right place in the old version. Bravo!

The new version freshly available on the Motherlode fixes that. But the option dialogs for localized versions remain unmodified. Only the English version of the render menu is improved.

As a workaround I suggest that you install the all new Celestia 1.6.0 RC1 and then replace the “locale” folder of Celestia-ED by the one from Celestia 1.6. You will obtain something like that:

Image

Some options (in red above) won’t works because they are not 1.5.1 features. But they don’t cause trouble either. This is not a perfect solution. Perhaps Vincent has the true localized files for this version of Celestia?

The minor moons option seems not to work. Actually this is because of the minormoons.ssc file in the ‘extras’ folder. The moons are not tagged as ‘minormoon’. As above, I suggest replacing this file by the one from Celestia 1.6. Same thing for numberedmoons.ssc.

Thank you very much! I got it! :D

I followed your suggestions and the "View Option" menu contains now "Dwarf Planet", "Moons", etc.
I tried the Educational Activity 3 and it runs perfectly. The only feature I did not manage to view is the close view of the "Aurora Borealis", but the rest is great.
I wait for the correct localized files for version 1.5.1ED by Vincent.
Thanks again,

Marco.
