Please provide the details of your computer hardware, including the model of graphics card and version of OpenGL.
I suspect that your computer's graphics driver needs to be updated. It should be available as a free download from the manufacturer of the graphics hardware. Celestia depends on the vendor's OpenGL driver code working correctly.

May I help remember you that Educational Activities are designed to run with the special Celestia160-ED version instead of the default Celestia distribution. The Celestia160-ED version, base package and (2010) revised activities can be downloaded from:

Skyless,
You don't mention what model of graphics hardware and graphics driver is in your laptop. Both are very important.
Select Celestia's menu Help. Then select OpenGL Info
Please copy-and-paste the top half-dozen lines into your post here.
p.s.
The number of objects within the field of view also makes a big difference in Celestia's performance.
If you've installed many new Addons, that would make Celestia run more slowly. If that's the problem, you might consider temporarily moving the ones you aren't interested in looking at into a different directory.

Re: It Shows Slowly
Ofcourse Windows 7 tries to use all your RAM as cache. Is this a bad thing? I think not. Why not use all the RAM available rather than NOT use all the RAM available. It may even speed things up
Not that I'm complaining about my system running Celestia, although even with an SSD harddrive fast simulations with orbits and spice kernels are quite sluggish..

Re: It Shows Slowly
CAP-Team,
I'd expect a faster CPU clock to make a performance improvement for orbital mechanics (like SPICE) while a faster SDD would improve initial loading of textures, models and data files. I.e. a faster CPU would reduce the sluggishness while running, and a faster disk would reduce the jerkiness when things load.
In other words, you might want to consider upgrading to a 5GHz overclocked, water cooled system
Maybe someday Celestia will be multithreaded and calculate multiple orbits and occlusions in parallel.

Yes! That's what we want! Multi-threaded Celestia to make optimal use of our multicore CPUs!
