Celestia151-ED & 1.6.0

Post #1by carlopacca » 11.09.2009, 09:47

Hello,

how to manage Celestia151-ED and the 1.6.0 releases on the same machine ?

On my PC I run celestia 1.6.0 with the related .CEL association.

I installed Celestia151-ED, and when I run scripts from the related docs, 1.6.0 starts.

Have suggestion how to manage both releases ?

Thanks

Carlo

I reply to you since anyone do this, but I do not have associated the file to the program because I usually do manipulate them and thus when I click on it I want an editor to be displayed. Anyhow, if you run Celestia on Win Xp system, open regedit at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

You must see, amongst the others, the celestia extensions (cel, celx, ssc ) expand its trees and in the right panel you must see something like this (in English):

(default) REG_SZ
a REG_SZ celestia.exe
b REG_SZ WORDPAD.EXE
c REG_SZ celestia.exe
MRUlist REG_SZ abc

where "a" is celestia 1.6 and "c" is celestia 1.5 EDu. Now this method sometime work, sometime not. Try to invert the MRUlist as "cba", in order to "tell" registry to load 1.5 EDU first (this order is just supposed here, probably you have another order, but always with two celestia.exe enters; the second is 1.5 EDU. It may be the first enter). Anyhow, when you righ click on .cel/celx you must see two celestia enter within contestual menu, whether you do not see it, then you must add another celestia entry in the key above with the full 1.50 EDU path.
Never at rest.

Carlo:

A script will run on either Celestia151-ED or Celestia160. If you want it to run on Celestia151-ED instead of Celestia 160, simply launch Celestia151-ED.exe first, by clicking on its program icon. Then, from within the program, pull down the file/scripts menu, navigate to the script and launch it. It will play from within Celestia151-ED.exe

Likewise, if you have a cel/URL link enbedded in some document or website somewhere and you click on it, Celestia151-ED.exe will go to it even if your cel and celx extensions were registered to Celestia160.exe. Just make sure Celesti151-ED.exe is running in advance, before you click on the cel or celx.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I just installed Celestia 1.6 and found out 151-ED later. The binary installation files are quite different. I would appreciate it if someone can share what these two are different. Are any of those superset of the other? Can I use Educational activities in normal 1.6 (just to save double installation)?

Many thanks!

pickja:

Celestia151-ED is a version of Celestia that is similar to the regular new version of Celestia (1.6.0). Some of 1.6.0's new features are in fact, part of 151-ED. The differences now between the versions primarily involve how add-ons are loaded and used. For example, the commands used in certain files to load a spacecraft into Celestia1.6.0 and have it orbit and rotate around some celestial body such as a moon or planet, are quite different from the commands used for the same effect in Celestia151-ED. Because of this, some of the hundreds of customized add-ons designed to be used in the educational version of Celestia151-ED, will not work in Celestia 1.6.0, and visa versa. Celestia 1.6.0 also has a few new things, such as better screen markers and an enhanced capability to use an add-on called "Lua Edu tools". You can find out more about it at http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13162

Celestia151-ED had two advantages over other versions of Celestia. (1), it came with a sound capability. Scripts can be written that command Celestia151-ED to play sound files. Celestia 1.6.0 does not play sound. (2) Celestia151-ED had the capability to display an "overlay" texture such as a cockpit window, on top of the Celestia screen. Earlier versions of Celestia did not provide that. However, overlay capability has been added to Celestia 1.6.0, if you download and install Lua Edu tools.

Vincent, the designer of Celestia151-ED, has provided me an upgraded version (1.6.0-ED). There now exists a version of Celestia 1.6.0 that will play sound. It has not yet been formally released for the simple reason that there is some significant incompatability between the add-ons used with Celestia151-ED, and Celestia160-ED.

To make a long story short, the educational activities provided for Celestia 151-ED may or may not work with Celestia160, or Celestia160-ED, due to differences with files. I intend to test out all of the add-ons provided with 151-ED in the next few months, and edit them so that they do work with Celestia160-ED (if possible). Until then, I suggest you continue using 151-ED if you wish to take the 12 educational journeys available from the motherlode website or from my own educational website. The differences in features is really quite modest.

Regards

Frank

Hi Frank:

Thank you so much for such a detailed reply. I plan to use Celestia for both my son and other education events for adults. The sound capability seems to be quite useful for that purpose. I'll stay with 151-ED for now and look forward to 1.6-ED.
