No matter how one does it, but this operation would cost me an hour before everything is changed. I dont have such extra hours. I am simply not motivated, since that point is of minor importance, really. Then one should also change the name of nearstars.stc, since it also contains lots of binary orbits from Grant.

I just don't see the need for all this work.

Yep, indeed the name convention for Celestia data files is a bit odd... In fact I suppose there is no convention at all...

To me all location files should begin by locs_, the asteroids catalogues by astero_, binaries catalogies by bin_ etc...

(... no in fact binaries should be something like stars_bin_visu.stc for example, among stars_nearest, stars_revised etc...)

But yes, it's a bit late now... :(

Well, the suffix STC is already saying it's about stars.

And don't forget you can change all the names in your installation, if you wish (and editing the config file too). It's just that, after an update on CVS, it may be messy to update our personal installation.

Ok for .stc, but I was saying that for a question of grouped/sorted files.

Once I change the whole structure of the data folder, with a solarsys.ssc divided by system of planets with they own locs, minor moons and even trojans for certain planets... It was really nice... But there is no point in doing this if your next build gives you the original files... :(

I've found something which is puzzling me a bit : if I understand correctly what you did, you disactivated all the spectral binaries which are having a visual counterpart, is that right ? Well, the binary Del Equ is disactivated in the visual file, and activated in the spect file. I'm wondering why, in this case.

In the visual binaries file, I've found a double (in the same file !) :

"MU. Boo" is defined twice, with some small coordinates variations. In Celestia, both (almost identical) binaries can be seen, at some distance from each other, and with the same name.

After lots of checking, I've found only two "anomalies" in the visual binaries STC file, as stated in my last two messages :

1- Del Equ is fine, except that it's commented out in the visual, while active in the spect file. I find this a bit odd, since all the other doubles are disactivated in the spect file.

2- Mu. Boo is defined two times in the visual file, with some slight variation of parameters. One should be removed.

Here's a script to mark all the visual and spectroscopic binaries, plus some others (from Grant). Total of 22 + 161 + 56 = 239 binaries. Take note that I've added the space after the HIP prefixes :

many thanks for your thorough testing!

Del Equ was found earliest as being defined in both files. Here I went previously to the literature and concluded that the data from spectbins.stc was better than the one from visualbins. That's why I kept the former.

MU Boo appears to be CORRECT.

It is indeed defined twice in the visualbins file, with same barycenter but different parameters for the components. Yet the two entries have also different HIP numbers 75411 and 75415! Indeed there is also this double entry in the original data table.

In SIMBAD

HIP 75411 -> MU.01.Boo
HIP 75415 -> MU.02.Boo

AHA! ;-) (see my longstanding relation to the mu Boo system below)

Tonight, before committing the final file versions, I shall straighten the name syntax a bit. Right now there is a left-over . after the MU
It should perhaps be MU. -> MU.01 and MU.02
Also I'll introduce a space after HIP xxxx

Your marker script is GREAT! It's nice to see that the distribution of binaries is quite isotropic (spherical).

Here is a nice photo of the entire mu Boo multiple system. I know that system since my early youth as observing astro-amateur. The splitting of mu.02-BC was always a test star for my 4-8 inch telescopes (< 2" distance) . Right now we are in a most favorable position on Earth.

What do you mean with your "Shouldn't it be" remark?

I was of course quoting a main official nomenclature for these binary systems from the professional SIMBAD database:

MU.01 Boo
MU.02 Boo

Your MU1 and MU2 proposal is not found in any official database AFAIK. So are you proposing that I use a "homebrewn" name??
What are the sources for your proposal?

Another official naming is also frequently used

51 Boo A
51 Boo B

But this has various disadvantages in our context. We would then encounter e.g

51 Boo A A
51 Boo A B

etc.

If I'm not mistaken, those are just the ordinary superscripted Bayer designations. The Yale Bright Star Catalog has "Mu 1 Boo" and "Mu 2 Boo" (with a space), but I believe the current ASCII format used in Celestia is "MU1" and "MU2". At least, that's what Celestia's selection type-in accepts.

OK I checked the starnames.dat file. Indeed that's the names that Celestia uses (MU2, BET2, BET1,...), which are not conform, however, with the encouraged SIMBAD identifiers. While the Yale Bright Star catalog is well known among astro amateurs, it is not really a professional level up-to-date star catalog.

However, I found out that SIMBAD does accept MU2 Boo etc. Hence we should continue with that previous notation.

Exactly 20 years ago...

It is superseded since a long time. It's just the brightness range covered that comes handy for amateurs. It's not the kind of catalog that these days sets standards including names! John Bahcall died August 2005...

Obviously, a cross index needs the HR = Bright Star numbers and these necessarily invoke the corresponding catalog, i.e. the Yale Bright stars...

But this is just for historical completeness. It's mainly the HIP, Tycho and HD catalogues who are these days taken as references.

The main changes were the insertion of a blank
  • HIPxxxx -> HIP xxxx
    to comply with our general convention.
