Adaptative UI depending on lightning of user's site.

Post #1by ElChristou » 19.11.2008, 21:26

Sometime ago, tweaking the color palette, it came clear that the level of light of the place where the user is (room, outside day/night with laptop) should have a role in the rendering of the guides lines and why not others elements of the UI too.

Basically, the solution would be to implement a slider to navigate in a range of brightness for some elements, adapting them depending on the user's needs.

As a prenthesis, an interesting solution (at least on recent laptop) would be to use the lightning sensors adapting the brightness of the screen to do the thing alone. Of course this wil be much too complex and not all computers have such sensors, but stil the idea is interesting.

Stellarium in it's recent released aready propose a night vision features stwitching the whole UI + some graphical elements in shade of red. That's the kind of step we should go for, but perhaps not this way. Perso, concerning the guides (grids, labels, orbits etc) I suppose a simple switch between too set of colors could do the trick. A fading from one to another with a slider would be more elegant but that's a detail.

Now, it's also true that the severals panels (control, browser etc...) are also problematic when opened in a very dark area. The contrast between the black OGL rendering window and the panels become too high and so a bit agressive (unconfortable). For this, there isn't much solution apart the one used by Stellarium. Perhaps we don't need such red night vision stuff, but changing the background color of the panels to a darker ton should be enough.

One point linked to this topic is the possibility to change the brightness of the guides depending of what kind of star rendering is used. A line just visible at it should be (not too obstrusive) in point stars become much too weak in scaled disk mode. Taking into account such problem would also be a good point to the clearverness of Celestia.

Opinion?

Old post of mine with no success at all!
Anyway I still believe we should work on this for the next UI...
