Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
I would like to add a little something to this discussion by sharing my views as a newbie on the Celestia community (and, as such, probably unbiased). I am as happy as anyone else in here downloading a 90Mb zipped file. That is to say, I'm not happy at all. However, while I uinderstand Don's comment...

Re: Keep the comments coming
Hi folks, Firstly, to address the immense download time, I just downloaded WinZip's CLI add on and have been testing it. It works great and this means that it is relatively simple to batch create .zip files for the a grid similar to DBrady's suggestions (although 128 packages seems a bit of an over...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Then they are probably not set up in the alternative surface definition (did not have a chance looking at walton's *.ctx file)
That's correct.
Walton referred this to be a work in progress.

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
It's 512x512 indeed, Fridger. You can try and download by chunks and leave it downloading overnight. The server supports resume. But meanwhile Walton is working on a smaller size download. It won't be a big improvement but every bit is always good. I will make it available as soon as he finishes it....

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
I'm currently sorting out the ocean tiles from the dds version. I'm doing this manually by looking at the JPG version and annotating those tiles with their size above 3.359 bytes (the one I found to be solely water). From what I've been doing so far (had to leave for a few hours so I'm only at 1/3 y...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
The individual resolution sets are now available for download. This cuts the download into more manageable sets. Only missing the landmasses tileset for the level 5 texture. Already working on it. It's a somewhat lenghty process finding and stripping all the ocean tiles among a 2,048 tileset. So ple...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Mmm...at least someone knows what they're doing!...still can't see the screen shots (Yes I've refreshed). Can I still download the 90meg version of the 32k...or are you going somewhere else with this? I don't want to jump into this 'virtual texture' lark before it's ready!! Yours...a bit confused.....

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Ok, DBrady. Thanks for the correction. Thank you all for yur patience. I just host them, I have no graphics design background. Hence, my trouble trying to do this. ;) I already separated the zip file into 5 blocks, each representing one of the levels. I'll go now and put these ones available for dow...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Thanks for the info, DBRady. That's exactly what I was trying to understand in order to me the files available in a comprehensive manner for those who wish to download. This is doable. It's already 2am in here so I'll only be doing this tomorow. However, mind you the current pack goes up to level 5 ...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Ok. Walton asked me to relay the following to you since he's currently at work. It's about separating the zip file into more mangeable pieces: I'll take a look at it, however, I would be very surprised if it made much difference to the final size fo the zip file. All the ocean files will have compre...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
bh, But it's all in one gigantic lump :( Mario, A lot of people, not just Jack, would like to be able to download the highres pictures for just a small area of the surface. It'd be greatly appreciated if you could persuade Walton to make the high-resolution directories available separately, but for...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Is there any 32k Earth virtual texture set yet...? I'd like to be able to download only the parts I want in super Hi-res... Remember 70% of the earth is ocean, any I don't really want to see that in 32k... I have a dialup too, so if I could build up my collection of ctx tiles bit by bit it'd be bet...

Re: 32k BlueMarble Virtual Earth Texture is now available
Ok. It's there. You can now also click on the images to see their real-size counterparts and added a small description of the snapshot to the alt attribute of the image. 3 notes only: - My graphics card is really not the best to be taking snapshots without prejudice to the quality of the etxture. It...

Re: NGC 1499 "too big"
Thank you Selden. I thought the image files Astroboy delivers within his zip files were just an extra. Now I know better. I'll stop making gratuitous questions ;) I know you provide on your website a very good tutorial on all this. Simply because I don't plan to be a Celestia artist, doesn't mean I ...

Thank you Jack. Most informative.
I saved the link your provided for future reference.
I also changed the mesh line as you suggested. It's more informative this way.

Re: NGC 1499 "too big"
Hmm... good tip julesstoop. Thank you. I don't have Photoshop. But I do have PainShop Pro and it should do the trick. However this raises the following question: Astroboy's nebulas are in 3ds format. He does provide the png/jpg files along with the download (which I unzipped to the mesh folder anywa...
