Re: Adding more RAM memory or changing the video card?
For a really low budget graphics card upgrade, for ?50-?60 ($80-$100) I'd suggest seeing if you can find a OEM Geforce FX5200 (DirectX 9 compatible) or a Radeon 9000 (faster than the FX5200, cheaper, but you won't get the benefits of DirectX9, not as compatible with Celestia). I'm thinking of replac...

Ah, you can always rely on traditional British weather. On Sunday, after suffering 35'C temperatures all day, it poured it down in the evening. You Americans don't know what you're missing...

I've seen a few Perseids over the last few nights, including an amazing one that streaked across the northern sky and left an amazingly long and wide trail.

With 64MB should be able to use 16k DDS textures with no problems.

new (sort of) Sun/star texture
Seeing as there's a thread elsewhere asking for (among other things) an improved sun/star texture, I'd thought i'd be a good idea to post this sun texture based on real data (the current star texture in Celestia isn't, I think). It looks quite impressive in Celestia, similar to real astronomical pho...

Re: COCK-PIT Add-On
The commercial sim X-Plane (http://www.x-plane.com/) includes a X-15, and I think it includes a cockpit. It's great fun, dropping from the wing of a B-52 and going up to ridicolous speeds... shame it costs so much!

Re: Signature images.
I think once a signature picture becomes larger than an average post it's too big. Certain forums which I won't mention  have users with enormous signatures that break about twenty-two of the Stuff That Should Never Be Used On A Webpage rules and literally are 5 or 6 times the size of the p...

Re: Earth Flooded! Part II: The Floodening
Hmm, very nice :D Darkmiss, I've tried your program and it seems to finish converting the file (it begins with "\earthflood8k.tga -->", then a minute or so later it becomes "\earthflood8k.tga --> .\earthflood8k.dds", but all I get is a 0kb "scratch.tmp" file and nothing else. Am I doing something wr...

Earth Flooded! Part II: The Floodening
I've finished a 8K flooded Earth (roughly 100 metres sea level rise) with a 8k bump map, but they're slow JPEGs (also in PNG and PSD), so if someone could advise me on how to convert them to DDS I'd be grateful. Here's a few screenshots to whet your appetite... The Amazon floods! http://www.shatters...

The link to the post about my old flooded Earth texture is here http://www.celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=875
It's a bit messy, and it's probably not that realistic, so I'll have another crack at it in 8k.

Re: Newbie neeed help with Celestiha - I want wonderful Earth
Hi kary, First a question: Can your GF 4 MX show effects like bumpmapping and specular reflections (has this card pixel shadder and vertex shadder) ? I'm not sure. :?: The Geforce 2 MX does specular and bump mapping (hardware pixel shader, software vertex shader) so presumably the Geforce 4 MX can ...

Would it be impossible to get an astronomy magazine to have a review or feature about Celestia? I've got an issue of Sky and Telescope with an article about free software... just a thought.

Normal map - strange bug
Sorry if this bug has been reported before... Messing around with Mars textures, I defined a NormalMap texure and I got this strange problem where the only parts of the surface texture rendered were the highland (I think :? ) areas. See; http://www.shatters.net/albums/album01/map_bug.jpg Here's all ...

Re: Leaving, too...
I personally am VERY relieved to see fridger is back, for a while I almost considered leaving too. I agree... I think if Fridger and Don both left totally, after the loss of Rassilon earlier, I'd certainly feel as if Celestia had lost most of its "gurus", so to speak, and it just wouldn't be the sa...
