Look

Look. I've contributed to open source projects in the past, and never experienced anything like this. I don't need this hostility in my life as my reward for fixing your bugs and for adding new information. Even in your last post of a semi-"apology', you had to take the time to put in that thing abo...

Z-buffering

I know this system to be a Level Of Detail mangement. Exactly. :) I've used something similar in another project before, and would expect it to work well enough in this case to extend the terrain to a landscape without too much of an increase in polygon count. Turning off Z-buffering is an option, ...

Questions

Ok, Fridger, please answer these for me... 1) In a post about how Celestia's performance is slow on some systems like my home system, is it: A) Inaccurate to say that it is slow on some systems B) Accurate to say that it is slow on some systems Take my home computer as an example. 2) If it is slow o...

Re: Additional universe information patch completed

The key to extending it to a landscape mode is tesselating the grid more when it's closer to you; thus, the big adaptation would be to make it use not a single grid, but a series of grids of different resolutions, the more distant ones lower res and the closer ones higher res. I'm not sure what sort...

Re: MH

:P I work in graphics (yes, Fridger - do you want screenshots of programs that I've developed, since you decided to cast aspersions about that in your last email simply because the sysadmin didn't restore my graphics driver the last time that they restored this system, as if that's my fault?), and ...

Re: Additional universe information patch completed

Karen, There is a version of Celestia's User's Guide that's in HTML format, but that's completely separate and not directly readable from Celestia as it is right now. It's easy for someone to define an object which links to it, but, again, that's not quite the same. Also, the User's Guide is a manu...

Terrain

To Paolo: Oh, indeed, the engine that I wrote would need modification. It wasn't designed for a landscape that reaches to the horizon, and was only designed for specific terrain sets. But, one of the great things about fractal terrain generation is its adaptability to all sorts of environments. I co...

Re: Additional universe information patch completed

Fridger: Lets look at non-cropped images for the first 10 pages of images (an arbitrary number), and see what we find: None: 0 Terse: 9 Verbose: 6 Can't tell, but either Terse or Verbose: 2 Of the 17 identifiable non-cropped Celestia images, not a single one had turned information from the default o...

MH

Have you seen the 'Mostly Harmless' project? ( http://mostlyharmless.sourceforge.net )Its a game in progress based on Celestia that implements gravity for spaceships etc.. It might be worth having a look before you start on this. I'm actually writing an email to Marc right now. :) I'm noticing in t...

Ah!

Ah, thankyou thankyou thankyou! That's just what I need. :) For age, we at least have an upper bound (I did program star lifespan tables into the infopatch), but at least that's something. It looks like this would translate best into a table sort of like star temperatures had been doing, and I had s...

Re: Additional universe information patch completed

Fridger: Here's a google image search for "celestia" http://images.google.com/images?q=celestia&ie=ISO-8859-1&hl=en Notice that almost all of the images that haven't been cropped not only have information on, but have verbose information on. People like this feature. You don't take out/weake...

Re: Additional universe information patch completed

Paolo - The project that I have planned aft er the current one that I'm working on (free-floating bodies) is part of one that's also on your list. I've written a really nice looking terrain generator before, and I plan to adapt it to Celestia planet surfaces, using the "known" points from tbe bump a...

I would have figured that this thread would be about development issues or issues related to the patch.

I never should have put a URL in my info section. :P

No, not that picture! ;)

hehe, yeah (and I hate that picture, but it's one of the only ones that I had available when I put my council site up...). If you don't want the additional information in Celestia, that's fine, although I personally think it looks pretty dern neat being able to get all sorts of information about a p...

Actually

Actually, I was killing time, waiting for an assignment, which I finally got. So no more Celestia for me here :P

BTW, an option to change the polygon count still would be very nice. ;)

Huzzah!

Thank you everyone. Just knowing that other people weren't getting these problems prompted me to run some tests, and apparently *neither* of my computers had hardware GL acceleration working. That'll do it every time ;) Now I can enjoy the beauty of Celestia at high FPS, huzzah! Hmm, I wonder if I c...

Re: Performance issues

At work: Dual Intel Xeon 1.8GHz (3578.26 bogomips each) NVidia GeForce 2 MX (generic) 1600x1200x16bpp At home: 1.2GHz Athlon (2385.81 bogomips) ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra 1280x1024x16bpp As I'm not a gamer, I don't have any games to compare it to. Could the problem be the res/bpp? Still, it's quite slow...

Performance issues

This is a wonderful program (as you'll notice since I already got into coding it not long after dl'ing it for the first time - see the developer's section for a patch to add all sorts of types of information to Celestia). However, there are some significant issues I've hit - most notably, performanc...
