I know this system to be a Level Of Detail mangement. The key to extending it to a landscape mode is tesselating the grid more when it's closer to you; thus, the big adaptation would be to make it use not a single grid, but a series of grids of different resolutions, the more distant ones lower res and the closer ones higher res.
