I was experimenting with key handling (see http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12653&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=45#p109115 ) and I wanted to post something over here on this forum. Following Chris's example ( http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9813&...
I have finally figured out the script I want for toggling the indicators. So now, I'm getting ready to put together a final add-on package for the Motherlode that will encompass Martin's tectonic plates + our volcanoes + my earthquakes. About the script: used as is, it simply toggles the earthquake ...
One thing I've noticed right away is that it is difficult to select or right-click on the earthquake stars. This is a shame, because I went through a lot of trouble to get InfoURL's for each earthquake! So I fooled around with the CMODs and figured out how to put a little cross at the center of each...
I've got earthquakes for you now, finally! The National Geophysical Data Center (part of NOAA) has a database ( http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/hazard/earthqk.shtml ) of almost 6000 significant earthquakes dating back to 2150 BC. It's updated regularly (most recent one is 9/11/2008!) The database is a bit ...
This folder contains volcanoes_locs.ssc, volcanoes_bases.ssc, and the 7 colored cmods. For both SSC files I have included unique ID's in the names of the "unnamed" volcanoes.
Very cool Vincent - it had occurred to me that scripted surface feature changes could affect all surface features, and not just volcanoes. The Smithsonian database has a numbering system for the volcanoes - it would be better to identify the unnamed ones with this number or some other non-arbitrary ...
Update: Thank you Vincent for supplying me with what I needed to work this out. Now I have a new problem. The script for changing the CMOD color works just fine, but not if Emissive is set to true in the SSC. Without Emissive true, I get colored circles, but they are visible only where the sun is sh...
Hey Vincent, Thanks! I didn't know there was an ER Type, it's definitely more appropriate (though my version of Celestia doesn't have the volcano checkbox. Is there a list somewhere of all the location types?) I'll PM my email address to you, unless you want to upload celestia.exe in a zip file here...
Update: So I've discovered that the Color attribute is not accessible in a celx script. This means I'll have to employ a hack - Vincent has used the trick of adding information to an object's name, but I don't want to do that. It turns out that Mass is accessible, and since Celestia doesn't do anyth...
I've reconciled the databases, and have created new SSC files: volcanoes.zip The zip folder contains: volcano_locs.ssc, volcano_bases.ssc, circle_yellow.cmod I have not written the script yet that will alter the cmod colors - that's next. So all the volcano bases appear as yellow circles, but the co...
Thank you Vincent. I was thinking of using the Color attribute in the SSC as a way to carry color information for the CMOD - I think I saw something like that in one of your scripts. I don't think the Color attribute will have any effect on the circles, and thus would be a "safe" way to ca...
Could SurfaceFixedRotation simply be called Attitude? I suppose that only means the pitch (tilt) and roll. You're trying to describe something like Attitude + Bearing, or Attitude + Azimuth. But still, it wouldn't be entirely incorrect.
Ah Fridger, you're a tease! I looked at Cham's volcano source ( http://160.111.247.173/ ), and sure enough, there is a category for last-known eruption. The last 2000 years are divided into 6 groups, and the volcanoes are assigned to either one of these groups, or to unknown. So the volcano base cir...
OK, here goes . . . I'll rename my volcanoes.ssc to volcano_bases.ssc to avoid confusion. This is the file that defines a circle for each volcano: volcano_bases.zip And here are a couple of screenshots (sorry about my low-res Earth - ancient computer!): http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/2892/346454...
Over on the Tectonic Plates thread ( http://www.shatters.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=12669&start=30#p106456 ) Andrea was asking about a volcanoes list without names which could be used with Cham's tectonic plates add-on. Cham stripped out the names easily enough, but I got to thinking about usin...
Fridger, Lovely lovely work. I hadn't expected accurate star colors - your simulation of 47 Tucana is stunning. Instinctively I agree with the use of sprite rendering - I would want a rendering of globulars to be perceived as somewhere "between" galaxies and open clusters, if you get what ...
Hi Grant! Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's a rendering problem - the planets do blink out when I recede from them (they stay in view for quite a while, though!), but nothing makes the moon pop into view - getting closer, making it bigger or brighter, even classifying it as a planet. The star has to ...
Hi! I was fooling around with the idea of making a star "invisible" so I could use it as a barycenter for a larger system. I edited stars.dat and changed the magnitude of a star so it became effectively invisible. This worked fine (except when you "go to" - the star's radius is based on its luminosi...
I had some fun putting this together, see what you think. Sorry about the cut-and-paste, I don't have a website for downloading add-ons. Paste this into a SSC file and put it in your Extras folder. I have a small text file describing how I arrived at these numbers - I'd love to have a real scientist...
