Tiles
Chris, I was looking at the delay that occurs (on my machine anyway) when the next level of texture loads and wondering if you load all the tiles at that particular resolution that are in the field of view. (I am assuming that you do but correct me if I am wrong). If that is the case then I thought ...

Surface model
If you could create say a 300m2 3D actual surface model to place under the rover and lander then you may also be able to create an xyz file for the rover so that it moves along it's actual exploration path. Just whether this information is available anywhere or not I don't know. Also do the xyz file...

Mimas & Herschel Crater
has anyone considered building a 3D model of Mimas to replace the existing sphere with an object that can better model the giant herschel crater. The 3D model itself can be a simple sphere for the rest of the moon but giving the herschel crater some relief should make it more impressive and better d...

Re: Professional asteroid data
just a thought but why not add an extra field to the asteroid data which basically controls whether celstia loads its or not. you would need to add some sort of interface to the asteroid list so that the user can simply tick on or off which asteroids they want included. this might open the way to se...

Re: New concept - surface scan
i recently downloaded the two (east and west) big nasa earth images mentioned elsewhere in this forum. from memory i think they totaled about 600MB as compressed tif images. i then uncompressed them which blew them out to about 6GB (don't try this at home) and stitched them together to create a sing...

Re: New concept - surface scan
hank,
have a look at this site
http://www.ermapper.com/products/ecw/co ... s_body.htm
i managed to get hold off the ermapper software which supports ECW compression and it also looks good. there apperas to be open free support for this variation of the format.

Re: New concept - surface scan
you may be right hank ..... it sounds promising although there still appears to be a limitation of image size based on the amount of ram. i don't think this is the case with EZW which is also a wavlet based compression method (EZW - Embedded zerotree wave). although entirely possible most users prob...

New concept - surface scan
There is always a constant desire to use higher and higher resolution textures of the planets and moons so that more detail can be seen. The problem of course is that high res textures require high end graphics cards with lots of VRAM and even then you are still very limited as to how far you can go...

Re: New orbit type
chris, that is great that news that you are adding trajectory support. a few questions though. 1. are you coding specifically for the voyager probes or is the file format suitable for any probes. 2. how complicated and acurate is the file format, is it within the scope of users to modify for other p...

Re: Swooshing hack
well i'm affraid they are right, despite best intentions i'm sure, this hack does not do anything that you can't do with the standard celestia. what is needed is a way to cruise around very smoothly. for instance try to fly up to a planet, do a couple of orbits while looking at the planet and then f...

Re: What Celestia should be...
yes i too am surprised that no one has commented on this subject before now. obviously there are many users that like to add all the fantasy stuff but there are also those like myself that are only interested in seeing things as realistically as possible. i'm affraid that having a black monolith in ...

Re: Flight Model and Joystick Control / Calibration
sounds great robert, i will certainly be keen to try it out as i think this is just what celestia needs. what files are affected by your mods ... will it be just a matter of replacing the celestia.exe file.

Moon Orbits
Is there a way to switch on the moon orbits or can this be added at some stage.
Orbit
When i zoom in close to a planet the orbit line (if i have orbits on) appears to turn at a right angle just befor the planet. All the other planet orbits remain OK.

Venus
I notice that when atmosphere is switched off Venus does not change. Is it possible to display the magellan radar suface image of the planet when the atmosphere is removed. There are Venus maps for a wide range of resolutions availible.

Re: Eclipse shadow bug at major planets! Need Advice
i am only using the plain vanilla graphics card that came with my PC but all the rendering in celestia works fine except for the eclipse. I too get the crosshair effect with and without the patch file. that aside ... great program

animated cloud textures would be pretty uneventful in real time for the planets but with time running 100x it would be spectacular. the chaotic boiling of the jupiter cloud bands and the swirling earth cloud patterns would contribute enormously to the overall visual effect of celestia.

latitude and longitude
Chris,
Is there a way to display the latitude and longitude for planets and moons. If not could this be added. Ideally selectable (toggle) by right mouse click.
Thanks ron
