Re: Help cannot replace Sol texture
Thanks! That worked great! So, I was thinking of putting this texture on other stars. At first I figured I'd just need to change the name of the star from "Sol" to "Whateverstar". But that didn't work. I changed the radius... and that didn't help either. I even made both a stc file and a ssc file fo...

Re: Help cannot replace Sol texture
After updating to 1.5, I too am now experiencing a strange spherical darkness at the center of the sun, the size of which changes depending on which angle you look at it from. I'm using Runar's "A portrait of our sun" add-on. I want to keep the add-on. What is going on? What should I do? It worked i...

Re: For fictional / semi-fictional system creators
I just emailed Buggs a new and improved version of the spreadsheet that includes the edges of the Habitable Zone. These formulae were detailed in papers by Dr. Jim Kasting... an all around swell guy. Now this aspect of the sheet ought to be as cutting edge as it can get... at the moment.

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
Furthermore, if you give it the exact same orbital parameters of BET Cen B, then add or subtract (360/6) = 60 degrees from it's ArgOfPericenter (or in the case of your SSC, LongOfPericenter), that'll place the planet in the Lagrange point you wish. The problem was that I needed to add/subtract 60 f...

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
@*&^%(@!!!! I spent the last 2+ hours reading and tweaking trying to find an answer to the following question, and I can't. So, here's what I hope is ONE LAST QUESTION: As per previous instructions, I took the ArgOfPericenter of the star and subtracted 60 to get the LongOfPericenter for my plane...

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
Well, I've stuck a fork in Beta Centauri and called it done. I tweaked the orbit of star B so that it will start where its RA and Dec say it is. (My book has it orbiting the other pair and I'm not rewriting that much over for the sake of accuracy... the planet's gotta stay in the L4.) All my other s...

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
To a degree I had it coming. There was more than one question I asked that I could have thought through to a greater degree. I blame it on staying up way too late and the headaches I get for doing so. Well, that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it. =)

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
Well.. you might consider to READ instead... Thanks for the constructive criticism! As a former teacher, I've told my students that many times. The problem for me is that much of what I read is greek to me. It has been very helpful to have people hold my hand and walk me through things, and I am ve...

Great spreadsheet Hungry! Thanks!
I'm trying to plug in the latest acquired data. How did you determine the separation between Aa and Ab in AU from the data we started with?

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
Just my luck. I found the two papers, the abstracts of which I posted at the beginning of this thread. They both share many of the same authors. It turns out the stats we've been using are from the first paper. The second paper explains why they are wrong and gives new stats. I am combing the second...

Hey, ajtribick, looking back, I got to wondering... Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
So, I asked Jim Kaler about Hadar B, and he said there was little info on the star. He pointed me to the WDS:
http://ad.usno.navy.mil/wds/wdsnewframe3.html
If you do a search/find for 14038-6022VOU 31Aa-B it'll bring you right to the star. Is any of this useful?

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
Of course it's possible, but I wouldn't know what to do to get it like that, other that constantly playing with the orbit until the star is in the right place. That would be rather strenuous, though.
Yeah, I was afraid of that. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
I'm cool with fantasy. =) I am doing this all for the sci-fi book I'm writing after all.... to help me visualize everything... that and it's fun to see my creations in Celestia. =) Is there a fantastic way to show B orbiting the A pair that would put B at the same starting point that it is seen in t...

Re: Jump Gates?
If you use a Lua script, you can redefine the "travel" keys.
Could a jump be programed in Lua? (Say so that if you enter a gate it will bring you to a specifiic destination at a faster rate than the miniscule rate I've reprogrammed it to with my other script?)

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
ajtribick, let's assume for the sake of argument that Hadar B is part of the system and orbits a common barycenter with Aa and Ab. How would that look in the STC?

Re: Is this enough info to construct a binary?
Ack, it posted the above reply before I was done... could hitting the space bar too many times trigger that? Wierd! Anyway.. on with my reply: I do not get the numbers you do for the orbit of the Aa/Ab pair of BET Cen...... I get a different set of elements Imagine yourself sitting at a table with t...
