Re: Programmatic access to image attributes

Try saving with the PNM format in GIMP. It handles 8 bit RGB colours. This image ( N.B. , enlarged 16 times here!): test.png comes out looking like this: P3 # CREATOR: GIMP PNM Filter Version 1.1 4 4 255 0 0 0 255 255 255 ... 255 255 255 0 0 255 ... after I delete the middle 12 triplets to, er, save...

Re: Just a Test - Loon, A Partial Lunar Topographic Model.

I want to upload my add on to the CM first before resuming discussion of the main issue. Therefore I digress into add on copyright/licence issues. I tried uploading the add on to CM yesterday (for the first time in years !). The upload forms present me with a conundrum: what copyright and licence? I...

Re: Just a Test - Loon, A Partial Lunar Topographic Model.

I don't suppose you've done the South Pole? Sorry, no. That's covered by my "no more hand-crafting, want to do it by coding" get-out clause. The LALT_M data was complete and regularly sampled: it was the best to use for the test. The South Pole data has null points, and there is a 1km wid...

Re: Just a test - 64K Moon

Greetings all! OK, s-s-s-slighty off topic, but this post above: JAXA Kaguya :D Maybe they will release a global map of the moon soon. I know they must have taken enough images by now. In any case, LRO will be up there in a couple months. cartrite prompts me to say: "Meanwhile, in another part ...

Just a Test - Loon, A Partial Lunar Topographic Model.

Greetings all! after one broken computer and the consequent 'joy of self-build' experience, thought I should come up with a decent contribution to the Celestia forum before resuming my popping off of those witty comments. To that end, I have converted some of the released JAXA/SELENE (KAGUYA) topogr...

Re: Some informations about textures (little FAQ)

Eeee! I thought t00fri would be repelled by the bold green font, but I see he's taken you in his more-capable-than-mine hands! It must be because you've made it more teal... We need a picture of your eyesore. Can you do a screenshot and upload it as an attachment? Yes, alpha channel is usually trans...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Woah! Hit and run! we support your concern. Dimitris Mislis and I, we used the formula given in Kasting et al. (1993) [1993Icar..101..108K] to compute the period of a planetary companion to be in the habitable zone around a MS star. To obtain the extent of the HZ, we took the values for S_eff...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Greetings chris , Celestia has its share of quirks, ... No, no, Chris! I think you'll find "features" is the accepted term in software development  . I think you've hit on the problem with using a Sidereal year as a unit of time: ... Yes, shocking to discover that Earth's orbital per...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Greetings again, Romie , but Spiff it is said on many places that the size is around 1.5 times of Earths radius but how was that figure arrived at? Plus, does seeing the exact same figure many times on the internet make it any more true? One suspects a wet-finger-in-the-air guess, copied and ...

Re: Some informations about textures (little FAQ)

It's a sign of inconsistent texture image resolution. Example: If your bumpmap is 8192?4096 pixels but your surface map (which contains the specular map in its alpha channel, right?) is only 2048?1024 pixels, then the specular map pixels appear four times as wide as the bump map pixels. (I set up th...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Ah Chris! thanks for letting me know the Celestia definition! That is key above all else. Shamelessly wikipedia-ing up right as I type, I see about astronomy generally taking the year to be 365.25* days exactly - oh but that's just so Julian! Even Gregorian doesn't relate truly to what we want. I wo...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Greetings Romie , Actually, a broadly all right SSC given what we are told, but some comments. I see you included the very link t00fri mentioned in the InfoURL anyway, but how come some numbers differ slightly? Mass. The Exoplanet site states mass of 'e' is 0.006104 ? Jupiter's mass = 1.94 Earth's m...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Greetings AVBursch ! I see you must have joined this forum today because of the recent exciting news on Gl. 581? That's a mightily detailed write-up on Gl. 581 d, but I fear too much extrapolation for concluding 'd' is anything like Earth-like. Here are some caveats against that which I'd like to to...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Apart from the orange skycolor which was measured ... Ah yes, so true, my dear Fridger, but only the sky. As we discussed for Venus and Titan, the colour of the overcast sky does not reveal the true rock colour (yes, I know you know!) so the surface of Titan could be bright green! Those were...

Greetings asteroid ! I can't fault your taste in great shots! but you can find more if you get closer to the source at NASA's Photojournal ( http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/ ). That one is here: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA08391 . It was taken on 28 Apr 2006. Thumbnailing/URLing is ...

Hey, but for all we know (the original images were monochrome), Titan's surface really could be those colours! That smog condenses into Fairy Liquid, see.

Re: Computer problems

Of course I will! The current one is assembled. A real new computer would make a fuss for my current drives: I'd have to fit them in, get IDE-SATA adapters, etc. Oh, I was just mocking the purchasing analysis paralysis that the computer manufacturing industry generates - hey, SATA this, DDR3 that! E...

Re: Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

I want a little cottage on habitable planet d ! I love hiking  Ah, but Fridger, this is likely an ocean world. You'll probably have to put the cottage inside a boat, then swim about. Anyway - huff - the deceivers ! Those dreams of habitability the press are pushing: 'd' has an eccentricity of...

Re: Computer problems

Guillermo, I hope I'm not too late for you, but there's a slight risk your computer could be writing junk to random places all over your hard drives before it reboots. I suggest you minimise all activity on your PC until you can eliminate what I write about below as the cause. I'm having a very simi...

Gliese 581 d and e announced, e is ~ 2 Earth masses.

Breaking news, it seems, which demands an urgent 'inside office hours' post! I wasn't sure about this when I spotted an update on exoplanets this morning: The Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia: Gl 581 ( http://exoplanet.eu/star.php?st=Gl+581 ) but it seems it's official. Universe Today : Nearly Earth...
