The thread 'Our planet from the space' on the forum of 'News of spaceflight' magazine in general and following links: 'Night cities', 'Seeing Earth IN Space', 'The View from Space - Countries and Coastlines' in particular! :)

LRO-LOLA data update

LRO team had recently released new version of Moon topography data ( http://imbrium.mit.edu/DATA/LOLA_GDR/ ). I used it ( http://imbrium.mit.edu/DATA/LOLA_GDR/CDEM_64.IMG ) to produce new 16K normalmap. The comparison with the old one reveals some improvements in details. As well as in many previous...

Re: Revamping Steve Albers' 4k Mercury texture...

Hi! Some doubts about Mercury’s color. 1. Honestly, the caption for picture PIA11364 is incomprehensible to me. ‘Every individual sees color differently’, yes, but this didn’t prevent Messenger’s team to produce true color movie of Earth; this does not prevent the production of true color pictures o...

Re: Really High-Res texture for earth?

People, please, calm down! When I first contacted Dr. Schrempp two years ago I had in mind that ‘official’ new textures would be produced, placed on ML and will became available to everyone. When the first version of NMtools was finished, a half-year-long pause followed. I then offered forumists her...

Re: Maps of Steve Albers

That might be worth considering as for me the disk space can be a bit of an issue. In IDL where I make my images I can select LZW or "pack bits" compression that I believe should be lossless. Perhaps that would save a modest amount (30-50%) - I'll see if it helps any for my next updates. ...

Re: New Locations slider

Excuse me for bringing this up once again, but couldn’t slider control of visibility be extended to all kinds of labels, not just only locations?

Re: Dawn mission addon

Let me note that the line 'Orientation [ 90 0 0 1 ]' of ElChristou's ssc file somehow disappeared from the ssc file currently on the ML, so the model is tracking the Sun by solar arrays' edges…

Re: Maps of Steve Albers

The maps are already available in JPEG and TIFF format, so whose traffic are you trying to cut down? If you answer some post, you could read it more attentively. But I can repeat: by activating ZIP compression of pictures. Currently they (TIFFs) are (mostly) uncompressed TIFFs. Nowadays a lot of pe...

May be interesting to somebody…

New land mask from cartrite finally was released (thank you again for it). I replaced the area lying to the north of 60 deg by the product of this mask (to obtain good coast lines) and of the old BMNG mask (to obtain inland waters) with a little bit of additional editing at the left and right edges ...
