IMHO it is related to the installation of the nvidia driver ...

problem solved, celestia intalled :))

using mini-howto NVIDIA-OpenGL-Configuration,
download MesaLib-5.0,
copy the glu.h into /usr/include/GL

glu.h is missing during configure
glu is installed so I search for glu-devel but without success ...
does glu-devel exist or is it part of another package ?

after checking what happens during a new installation, I noticed one line : Disabled GTK GUI because of missing packages. I guess it was gtkglarea ( thanks install file ) ; it was ! --> download + installation of the missing package and now celestia works fine, with the menu bar always look very car...

This is certainly the first report on a missing menuebar in Linux after 2500 mails... Since you have given practically no info, only guessing is possible. What's the state of your hardware 3d support (glxinfo output?)? Which graphics card? Did you get any error messages or warnings during the compil...

after installing celestia 1.2.4 on a fresh red hat 7.3 ( geforce2 pro ) no menu appears on startup ; tour guide and commands works
error message :

I think Igot the solution :
After the installation of the new driver 1.0-2313 from nvidia ( geforcepro2 ) I forgot to configure it.
Reading the complete release notes I configure all the options and now celestia don't freeze anymore !!
