Re: Jim Blinn & The History of the JPL Computer Graphics Lab project
Not an update again sadly, but here is more evidence to back up my theory: ⋅ According to this website , the website's owner met with Jim Blinn, who was organizing some old files. It turns out the files were from a research paper he wrote in the 70s. The files were later uploaded to the we...

http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1KLT5-gHlY10hQmXqDNlU_qkcUx6dlmgs Project VEAR (Voyager Encounter Animations Remake) is where I aim to recreate the Voyager animations by Jim Blinn and the JPL Computer Graphics Lab team in Celestia, but with new visuals while preserving the classic loo...

Re: Jim Blinn & The History of the JPL Computer Graphics Lab project
Okay, this isn't an update, but it's mostly around the texture maps. I propose a theory that Jim Blinn may have a copy of the texture maps and other data stored in a pile of floppy disks somewhere. Here's some evidence: ⋅ Since 1989, the JPL Computer Graphics Lab switched to PCs to render ...

Re: Jim Blinn & The History of the JPL Computer Graphics Lab project
I've decided to come back to this thread to post an update, but since my last post was almost 2 years ago, I will summarize the emails that were about the JPL Computer Graphics Lab project in order: ⋅ In April 2023, the Computer History Museum found some money. However, this wasn't enough ...

Thank you for pointing that out, I forgot to add some screenshots and previews since I was in a hurry, but I now added some.Sirius_Alpha wrote:It would benefit you to add some screenshots to help give people an idea of what they're downloading.

Re: Redshift Textures
Addon: innerplanets.png outerplanets.png redshift_textures_addon.zip This addon will basically replace (not modify) the planets and some of their moons, so if you're not using it, you must remove it from your extras folder. Because of Celestia's limitations, the cloud maps and newer textures are re...

Redshift Textures
RStextures preview.png newer textures preview.png Yes, the texture for Earth with clouds actually looks like that in some newer versions of Redshift. After almost a year trying to decode the textures from older versions of Redshift , an old astronomy software, and reprojecting them, I'm proud to an...

Gaseous Giganticus
I compiled Gaseous Giganticus with MinGW: gaseous-giganticus.exe I analyzed the exe and it requires no extra dlls It's also compatible with 32 bit systems Unfortunately, it was designed for powerful PCs. But, it will try to adjust the memory usage when generating a texture. If you choose a height ov...

Re: Upscaled planetary textures
Ah, it's okay. Just add "only use it for the NASA mesh" or something like that, so it can stop the confusion. And maybe state that the texture was colored artificially which is why its colors look off.

Re: Upscaled planetary textures
Okay then. Just add a note to your post of the upscaled texture map of Eros that says it only works for the NASA mesh. That way people won't get confused.

Re: Upscaled planetary textures
So, does that mean I can use the texture on my Eros mesh? If I can't, what are the "adequate properties" not featured in the mesh I provided? Is it the mesh's UV map?

Re: Upscaled planetary textures
Please let me remind you, that I started my post with this text: Eros 8k texture from NASA 3D model texture: https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/resources/2389/eros-3d-model/ Still, you didn't add a note saying that this texture isn't in equirectangular projection and it couldn't be used with a model that...

Re: Upscaled planetary textures
He never told you that you were responsible for NASA's results. Was that question directed to someone else? I looked in the "Exoplanet images and AI upscaling" thread and there was no one that told you that. I think you misunderstood his replies in that thread.

Re: Upscaled planetary textures
So why doesn't your upscaled texture look like the asteroid it claims to represent? I think the reason why it doesn't look like the asteroid is because the texture isn't in equirectangular projection. The texture is meant to be wrapped around only the mesh itself (because of its weird UV map matchi...

Re: PC Hardware Issues
Hello, I looked up your caps lock key's flashing sequence, and it seems that your PC (I assume you use HP) is most likely suffering from a RAM-related error.
If it's severe, you might have to replace the RAM.
I'm not a professional technician, this is what I can find on the internet.

Re: Jim Blinn & The History of the JPL Computer Graphics Lab project
Another bad news... (and maybe some good news?...) jegemail5.PNG So I decided to email Julian again for an update on the tape reads. Apparently, one of the tapes that was sent to prepare it for tape reading was destroyed on accident. Of course, the tapes are old and possibly in bad condition. Luckil...

Re: Jim Blinn & The History of the JPL Computer Graphics Lab project
Some unfortunate news...
The decoded data will not be released for an indefinite time, due to financial problems.
They have the tapes with the data, but they can't decode it because there is no funding for the tape reads.
I think we will have to wait until next year.

Re: Celestial Matters site alive again!
The CelestialMatters.org website seems to be offline for quite a while now. Does anybody know what's going on? Thanks for any information. The site is now a parked domain and is sadly offline/inactive forever. Its domain expired a while ago and t00fri is inactive for a long time, which means he can...
