Re: How about dds.gz textures?

As I haven't got a lot of feedback on this, I think I will just publish the patch here. I meant to reply sooner, and never did. Sorry... I should have voiced my support for your idea right away. This is something I've long wished for. I just checked out the CVS tree, and compiled with your patch. I...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

Why don't you collect the required operations in a batch script either for the GIMP or using ImageMagick. This task for 127 tiles just cries for automation... I tried imagemagick for the decompose/threshold operations, but never managed to get the same results that I got in Gimp. Sooner or later, I...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

I never worked with the channels separatly before so this will be a new experience. Thank You. You're welcome. When I finally found a method that "worked," I thought "Aha! I have the secret formula! I'll be the first with a really nice VT from the BMNG!" After seeing how much work it will be to fin...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

As I suspected. After comparing the 2 images, it clearly shows that I cropped out a lot of interesting areas Here's a wider view of the area, before and after applying the mask I created in Gimp. Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

If you could write a computer program, you could draw upon non-specialized data files to fulfill the unusual goals which you have set. I was wondering what could be so unusual about a spec map that makes a good match to the landcover. I think I have confused the topic by speaking of how much ocean ...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

Hi Johnathan, What does that area of the Adriatic Sea look like with no spec map? Here's what I see at 09:00 UTC on June 21 with no spec map: http://members.cox.net/daboid/celestia/images/adriatic_nospec_tn.jpg I turned up the ambient light a good bit to help contrast. That's the completely unretou...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

I think it is going to be unlikely you will find any specular map which matches the texture exactly No doubt. I would not expect anything to match exactly. The old 1Km maps all are much better matches than the supposed 500m watermask map, though. Like I said, I don't want to discount the hard work ...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

Even though you cannot program, other people can, and you could collaborate with them, if your project generates enough interest. I appreciate the encouragement. I'm not sure I have enough interest to invest that much energy in it, myself, though. 8) For now, I believe I'm just going to make do wit...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

The spec map is from Harold Schmidt which I downloaded from the Motherload. Did you try his spec map. Yes.. I believe it's just a VT of the UMD 1Km map that was the "standard" landcover for the original Blue Marble image. Unfortunately, it seems to contain all the errors and omissions of the origin...

Here are a couple of quick screens to illustrate some of the problems with the BMNG watermask (click them for the full res image): This is the Adriatic Sea with the BMNG spec map at 64K: http://members.cox.net/daboid/celestia/images/adriatic_bmng_tn.jpg And this is the same area with the Boson Unive...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

I've looked at the Watermask files at the bmng site and at a quick first glance I thought they may have been promising. But you are saying they are no good? Certainly unacceptable to me. I made a 64K VT from the raw watermask image, and was sorely disappointed when I saw the result. Dark rings arou...

Re: Sources for 500m landcover?

If you are ready to do some programming work, If you mean actual coding, unfortunately not. The only "programming language" I know is bash shell. :| http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/gltiles.html Hrm... but that's topo data. Are you saying I could extract a water mask from that? Coastlines I could ...

Sources for 500m landcover?

I have made several attempts at creating a 64K specular texture for Earth to go with the BMNG texture @ 64K. So far, nothing has been at all satisfactory. The first thing I tried was the watermask found with the BMNG images, here . I also tried the ndvi images found in the "ndvi" directory of that s...

Re: Questions about PNGs , transparency, and such.

I'm not a Photoshop user either but, in the Gimp, what I do is Filters -> Colors - Decompose, and choose decompose to RGBA layers, then save the alpha layer as, say, alpha.png. Then I delete the alpha layer from the decomposed image, and recompose the RGB layers. When I want to restore the alpha lay...

Re: The New Mars Texture

Hmm, a 16k texture mght be a load on an older 128mb card but not a 9800 series ATI, unless they don't handle the DDS textures as well as nVidia based cards do. Well, I use an exaggerated PNG normalmap, that doesn't make my poor Radeon too happy in the first place. From all I've read, ATI cards gene...

Re: The New Mars Texture

Of course if someone else wishes to do it I could supply the the texture. Do you mean a full 16K PNG, or other lossless format? If so, I'd love to carve that up into a VT. I've loaded the 16K DDS, and it looks great, but it's a bit of a strain on my 128MB Radeon 9800. The first thing I thought when...

Re: PNG vs DDS vs VT

the big picture advantages and disadvantages of the following formats FOR CELESTIA still escape me... PNG, JPG, DDS, VT I'm sure someone who better understands than I do will come along and make it clearer, but I'll have a go at it. It's all about image quality vs. performance. For small textures, ...

Re: Tile size settings in .ctx-files and a short experiment

This has the advantage, that aproaching the surface very slowly the higher level tiles are loaded so early, that the lower level tiles still look sharp. And the disadvantage of higher memory consumption, eh? Can anyone explain this to me ? The level3 tiles are definitely loaded when only parts of f...

...perhaps it has slid down his list. Here's hoping another vote would help it slide back up the list. I've been playing with the new Blue Marble NG at 64K. I can only "browse" a few places around Earth for a few minutes until memory beomes saturated, and I start swapping, as I only have 1 GB of RA...
