Random rocky planetary textures
I've been searching around for procedural texture generators lately. My hope is that maybe it will be possible to generate a pseudo-realistic looking planet based on it's size, type of star it orbits, and other random factors. So far, I haven't been able to find any tools with source code that can g...

thanks for the suggestions--some further ideas
If you do a search on n-body simulation, you will find a lot of information about how difficult it really is to perform those computational tasks. Simulating two or three objects is fairly easy, but once you get beyond that, it becomes very difficult. By visualizing the mass and distance of objects ...

very large array
A 1,000,000,000,000 ^3 sized array would be a bit large, eh? How about storing the star data (positions, star type, planets, etc) in "sectors" in the galaxy? Maybe do some sort of LOD, with the immediate sector rendered in full, but the farther away the sector, the less actual points are loaded in m...

Re: OT: Cassini takes first picture of Saturn
If you look at the cassini picture, there is a small sliver of shadow from the ring on the sunside of the planet. That small sliver is missing from the celestia version.
Planetary rings cast shadows on the sunside as well. There aren't any in celestia 1.2.5pre6 at least. :?

celestia realisim
One thing I noticed is that there is no shadow of the ring on the foward side of the planet, only the backside. I wonder when that will get fixed?

celestia version of the picture
Here's the same image taken from celestia, with about the same distance and date that the real image was taken.

Why do you like celestia?
Hi, I'm new here and I've been playing with Celestia for a couple days now, and I think it has the oppertunity to become one of the best digital orreys ever. I was wondering what your favourite part of celestia is? Mine is being able to visit any of the planets at my own whim and easily add to the u...
