Re: My First Add-On (coming soon)

I really like your planets, especially the ones in pictures 4, 6 and 7. I look forward to downloading your system. But be sure to create low/med resolution version(s), because many people balk at the idea of downloading someone else's 100 meg monster.

What does it do?

Could you describe your Warp Drive simulator?

What does it do? How does it work? Why don't you offer it for download now?

Re: Displaying velocity in joystick mode

On another Star Trek/Celestia note: if you turn on constellation borders in Celestia, you'll see a sphere centered on Sol with a radius of 10 light years. According to a widely accepted definition, in Star Trek a "sector" is a cube 20 light years on a side. So the space inside the drawn constellatio...

Re: Displaying velocity in joystick mode

A while back, for my own geeky fun, I created a table showing real world speeds compared to warp speeds, for reference in Celestia. I think my numbers are right, and no doubt someone will correct me if not. The warp factor values are based on Okuda's numbers from the Next Generation. http://xs411.xs...

Re: What exactly is Arcbuilders really about?

I've installed much from Arcbuilders, even though I never really knew what it was all about. I enjoy meandering about the quadrant manually (by joystick, that is), pretending to explore. Arcbuilders simply fleshes out more star systems. I enjoy the diversity, and since I've never made an effort to l...

Re: "A preliminary Celestia User's FAQ"

Shouldn't the sticky, locked FAQ be updated to reflect the new version that came out months ago? Right up top, it says that the latest version is 1.3.2 and provides a link.

Can I get an editor in here?

Re: exo KBO 2004 XR190 (a.k.a Buffy)

By Jove, Malenfant, I didn't mean to sound angry or step on anyone's toes, if I did. And I do acknowledge your plea for consistency (I assume you have a preferred, consistent definition of "planet.") I'm not suggesting changing anything, really. I think its funny when armchair (or even real) astrono...

Re: exo KBO 2004 XR190 (a.k.a Buffy)

To be honest, I'm not persuaded that people should be taught planets are majestic or share any similarities to gods, ancient or living. That's daft though. Mars was named Mars because it reminded ancients of blood, hence the god of war link. Venus was named Venus because it was a beautiful object i...

Re: exo KBO 2004 XR190 (a.k.a Buffy)

.... Personally I think it sounds damn stupid to go "...Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Buffy, Xena, Rachel, Oprah, Walmart..." Ha! That's hilarious. ... frankly the names of planets are themselves education of a sorts. Maybe you don't give a toss about some 'ancient teutonic god cousin th...

Re: exo KBO 2004 XR190 (a.k.a Buffy)

Talking about Buffy and Xena and Santa seems to go down the press' gullet a lot easier, and the common person identifies with it fairly well. The only drawback I see is that when the object *is* finally officially named, people will still want to call it Buffy. ...John... This issue amuses me. Firs...

Re: Unit Conversion

There are many, many, more stars in the same sphere as the 2.5 million brightest stars catalogued in the Tycho database, which is the best you can do for Celestia... Oh yeah, I'm aware of that. But I don't have any reason to think that the Enterprise D (or Voyager, etc) was usually in an area of th...

Re: Unit Conversion

Thanks, Buggs. That will be handy. Here's a quick and simple web-based calculator for converting light years to AUs, light seconds to miles, etc: http://www.easysurf.cc/cnver15.htm And for extra geekiness, here's a calculator to convert warp speed (or warp factor) to multiples of c (the speed of lig...

Re: Are things from Star Trek possible?

... I think there is always a hope, even a secret one hidden down deep in astrophysicists' secret places, that a warp drive would somehow, someday become possible. But they way we currently understand the universe and how it is constructed, the odds are, of course, pretty poor that this will ever h...

Re: Environmental Effects

I seriously doubt anyone has created such a calculator, or posted it online. Any such calculations that have been done were probably done on a case-by-hypothetical-case basis by the particular author. Some main factors that would determine the atmospheric effects of an impact: - Relative velocity of...
