Yes, that is one aspect of Ubuntu I don't really care for... none of the media players even have MP3 support by default for just that reason.

Re: Extreme noob question: where to put stars.dat in Linux?
I used sudo apt-get install celestia.
Do I need to also sudo apt-get install celestia-common-nonfree or is there other syntax?

Re: Bright Stars!
I think if one were to view a star from an AU away there will be a hell of a lot of glare. I agree with the OP that such would be quite a nice option to add.
Hungry4info, I love the wording in your post.

Extreme noob question: where to put stars.dat in Linux?
I'm used to running in Windows but now I'm using Linux, specifically Ubuntu 8.10. Can someone tell me what the full path is to where I should be putting the expanded stars.dat? o.O

Re: Binaries, remote links? Two questions.
Ah, thanks for the link Seldon. By rerender I mean a catalog update that takes some doublestar catalog, guesses the orbital elements according to whatever is currently known, and creates a system barycenter with the known components at semi- or not-very-accurate eyeballed distances. I am concerned m...

You may consider, for those of us who use Celestia a sci-fi writing resources, adding an additional class for political bodies and boundries, etc.

Re: Puzzling Download Attack on my Celestia Server
It's been my observation that unexplained connections from certain countries are best off blocked and avoided like the plague. China is one of them. If you're a web admin, it's Russia--I've had to block everything from *.ru on forums before to deal with the spam.

Binaries, remote links? Two questions.
1. Does anyone know of a good Celestia add-on catalog that rerenders binary systems (even just major ones, though I know there are double star catalogs with piles more entries)? For example: Capella is a sextuple star, but users don't see all these. The reason I ask is because a lot of people using ...

Re: Realigning John van Vliet's Mercury texture: how?
Okay, I made the adjustments, and attempted to upload it, however, it timed out and then took me to the main page again. In the meantime, I am hosting it on my site: http://www.sunandshadows.com/common/8kMercury.png . Sorry for the inconvenience.

Do you wish to adjust this yourself or have me do so and upload a copy to CML?

I am not sure; I suspect your terrain is actually correct but the landmarks in Celestia are wrong for whatever reason.

Re: Realigning John van Vliet's Mercury texture: how?
I changed the RotationOffset. This does not work: it rotates the whole planet, texture included. So the terrain will need to be repositioned. Might I recommend using the Ibsen and Petrarch Craters and Arecibo Vallis, a rather obvious set of close features in the Caloris Antipode region, as a referen...

Re: Realigning John van Vliet's Mercury texture: how?
Well, like I said I'm not really sure if it's the texture or the location database. But it's off. :) RotationOffset? I presume that's in solarsys.ssc? Thank you John; I'll wait for further posting from you before I try fixing anything myself. The texture is pretty sweet and I'd rather not break it w...

Realigning John van Vliet's Mercury texture: how?
I am using http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/creators/johnvanvliet/8kMercury.zip which is the first 8K Mercury map from John van Vliet. Unfortunately, the Locations in Celestia do not properly line up with the texture, or vice-versa. (I noticed the Hun Kal crater at -21.4 longitude while it is by de...
