Re: venus 32k/64k
My intent all along has been to inform. However, your pet "scientist" here keeps slipping his leash and making baseless, uninformed statements about the subject. I think I have every right to be exasperated at the way this thread has gone and about how I have been treated here. I pointed out an imag...

Re: venus 32k/64k
Every active participant in this thread knows about the tricky interpretation of radar images and their crucial differences wrto visual light imaging. So we don't need your wisdom here. Apparently you do need it. The link you pointed to has no bearing whatsoever on Andrea's texture that you so glee...

Re: venus 32k/64k
For some reason I find myself able to post here again. All I am going to say before departing these boards forever is that this Venus texture that you're all so enamoured with (and which appears to have Fridger's approval) is completely, uttterly wrong . It is as unrealistic as any of the former ora...

Re: venus 32k/64k
imaginative fiction dependent for effect on strangeness of setting I think it is very obvious that colourising a texture of Venus based on existing knowledge about the rock types on its surface that are extrapolated from in-situ sampling, imaging from the surface, and radar reflectivity does not ev...

Re: venus 32k/64k
As to Venus colors, please remember that there are NO color photographs from the Venus surface! The data that John is using are RADAR data, I suppose. Again, this is simply 100% false. There ARE colour images of Venus' surface, taken from Venera. The work that Don Mitchell has done on that is valid...

Re: Why Soviet Space Missions like Venera suffered.
I wonder how much stuff was published at the time in soviet journals too (not in english). The restrictions were relaxed somewhat after the late 70s though. Alexander Basilevsky (listed in the biographies on those Venera pages) and many of his colleagues were allowed to work with their American coun...

Re: venus 32k/64k
I think we can make some very educated guesses as to what colour Venus' surface actually is (and note, I'm just talking about the surface, not any reflected tint from the atmosphere). We know that most of the surface is volcanic plains, made of basaltic rock, which is generally black or dark grey in...

Re: venus 32k/64k
Since decades I have been involved in peer-reviewing for the world's leading scientific physics journals. I think I do have all qualifications to judge the scientific value of such presentations from a senior physicists perspective. That's great... if this was a scientific paper presented to a Jour...

Re: Super Nova Explosions Force at 1AU
If you are in a calculating mood, Malenfant, you might like to work out if such a force would be sufficient to entirely dismantle an Earth sized planet. Ugh, no thanks, it gave me enough of a headache last time... ;) Since planets do exist around pulsars I expect some worlds at least do survive the...

Re: venus 32k/64k
I have never claimed that his graphics work was not useful. I personally enjoyed the images, for example. It may be useful for all sorts of things, notably educational. Yet it is rather worthless in the sense of a reliable scientific analysis, where usually the analysis of the inherent uncertaintie...

Re: venus 32k/64k
Hm, this poses a quandry for Fridger doesn't it ;). I've been supporting Mitchell's work here, but my opinion doesn't count for anything in Fridger's mind because apparently I'm not worth listening to. But Chris is also supporting his work too, and Fridger does listen to him. And other professional ...

Re: venus 32k/64k
But I expect that every good scientist should listen to what others have to say, regardless of their standing. You would be surprised how long the list of people is even in this forum whose opinion I value VERY much. A number of them are no (natural) scientists at all. Then it should be obvious to ...

Re: venus 32k/64k
And incidentally, unless explicitly stated, one tends to loose every credibility with such methods. And a guy who tacitly fakes data ONCE, will do that uncontrollably again at other places... Nonsense. That's leaping to unjustified conclusions right there. By that logic, the fact that NASA fakes a ...

Re: venus 32k/64k
I am usually a peaceful guy. But when someone with your comparatively small experience in science starts off lecturing to me like a director e.g. how I should do my job then I indeed tend to loose my good temper! I don't tell you how to do your job, and never have. But I expect that every good scie...

Like I said, these perspective views are obviously done for aesthetic purposes, not scientific purposes. 'Nuff said ! Yes. I've never claimed otherwise, and neither has the creator of the pictures. I'm not seeing how this is a major revelation here (though the point is that the published perspectiv...

Re: venus 32k/64k
Thanks for proving my point about you, Fridger. And also for misrepresenting what I said, as usual. I never claimed that peer-review was "superfluous" at all - I just said that it is not infallible. The fact that something is not peer-reviewed does not make in invalid. And you are checking so...

Re: venus 32k/64k
First, http://space.com/scienceastronomy/060911_venus_images.html is an article on this. Also, take a look at the Sept 11th entry at http://donpmitchell.blogspot.com/ , he actually shows how he stitched together the images. I notice that the regions you point out are in the close to the horizon - it...

Re: venus 32k/64k
Finally, let me point out that I am NOT dismissing his work which definitely looks neat. But from a scientific point of view it is rather worthless. I think you're seriously underestimating the quality of the data. It doesn't matter if the mission is old - I was using and processing data from Voyag...
