Re: The splash screen font sucks !
I worked with type for over 12 years as the studio manager of a signmaking company, and I have to say I am sick of the sight of Arial, Helvetica and similar looking fonts. To me, Chams splash screen looks excellent, except for the fonts used. The first one seemed too generic (Arial etc), and the sec...

Re: So, 12 planets eh?
I don't really see why Ceres shouldn't be a planet. I know its in the asteroid belt, but it orbits the sun, is certainly big enough and more importantly, spherical! It looks like a planet should look.
Could Ceres not just be a planet thats inside an asteroid belt? That seems plausible to me.

Re: The peculiar results of an infinite universe
Well, this has been an, errr... interesting discussion so far :D The original poster claimed that many people believe the universe is infinite without knowing what that actually means. He wanted a method to illustrate to his students the implications of an infinite universe. The universe may indeed ...

Ok, so I was missing a fundamental aspect of space elevators!

Re: Space elevators and plate tectonics
Maybe I'm missing a fundamental aspect of space elevators or something, but would't it just be easier to adjust the position of the thing at the other end of the elevator, to reposition it above the base station?

Re: Can someone answer a question for me
The way I understood it, a person wouldn't literally explode - they would rupture internally, swell up and freeze. And short term exposure (like the scene from 2001 A Space Odyssey where he blasts himself out of one airlock, across a few meters of open space and into another airlock and then shuts t...

Re: Need some help - on some current videogames.
One of the current big name fighting games is Dead or Alive. The game involves lots of women fighters, and the developers seem to have spent most of the processor power on accurate modelling of the movement of their breasts...

Re: Mars Center of Gravity not at Center of Shape
Well, Viking did not record a BLACK dot at that position, all I can see is a slightly darker area. To me, it looks like a slight depression at best. I believe that the most plausible explanation is a rogue data point. I put in the other 2 possible explanations for completeness, but I wasn't really s...

Re: Mars Center of Gravity not at Center of Shape
Very interesting! I took the Viking context image from http://ida.wr.usgs.gov/html/m08055/m0805509.html and superimposed the above image on it. Notice the 5 reference points I have marked http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v105/speedfreek/misc/pic003.jpg Now I marked the same points on the version of...

Re: From the Big Bang to the Big Rip
So, in science, does anything ever become a fact ? If the theory of relativity has been proven, is it not a fact? Everyone used to believe the Earth was flat. Then someone came along with the hypothesis that the Earth was a sphere. Then came the theory to try and prove it. It has since been proved t...

Re: From the Big Bang to the Big Rip
Scientific theories have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. This confuses me, although I suspect it is just a problem of semantics. I thought that if something had been proven beyond reasonable doubt, it was a scientific fact . I assumed a scientific theory was something that had been proposed,...

Re: Supermassive Black Holes
The BBC TV version of the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy is far, far better than the recent film in my opinion, although the film did have a few good moments in it
BBC TV series:- Better than a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster!
Recent movie:- Mostly Harmless.
