I guess I'm about to answer my question: This is quoting from the www.lepp.cornell.edu site: "Make sure that it is a format that your graphics card can display. DDS texture files can only be shown by cards that were designed in the past few years. Cards made by 3dfx, for example, can't show them."

Essee, my system specs:
Windows XP
AMD Athlon XP 1800
Nvidia TNT 16MB
256MB RAM

I've installed Jestr's 64K VT textures (1-4) and followed what seemed to be simple installation instructions. I start Celestia and right click the Earth and select his new texture.
