Re: So, 12 planets eh?
You have to realise that being a planet or a moon is not and never has been an essential property of the things that are planets and moons: Ganymede for example is bigger than Mercury, so if it were orbiting the sun instead of Jupiter there'd be no contest about it being a planet (unless we'd want t...

Awesome. Can I be (one of) the first to ask if there is any further todo list that you two are/willbe working on? Can we expect a FT1.3?

Re: comet tails
*Clears throat* Question: are comet tails really THAT wide? I think they should be made a bit thinner, IMO. Well there will be a bunch of factors which would influence the geometry of the tails at different points in a comet's orbit; I have no idea how many of them are taken into consideration in C...

Re: comet tails
Yeah the amount of 'degree of detail control' that's stuck in the pre-build source has aways frustrated the anal side of my nature. There was a 'KCelestia' build a year or so ago which increased the rendering points of xyz orbit lines and ring segments, and looked fantastic. Some of these changes we...

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1.1 Version for Download
Anyone willing to try the following? It's a simple resize of Powell's 'best guess' for the milky way. It'd probably either come out like the NASA one or just be a more-or-less blank disc, I know. But I'd be interested to see if there is a difference. http://philrsss.anu.edu.au/~carl/milkyway.png [/i...

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1.1 Version for Download
There've always been two schools of thought about the goals of development: scientific visualisation vs shock-n-awe visuals. Proponents of the first will favour simple, schematic visuals and models, to cut the representation at the joints which science discovers. The second wants rich content for m...

Re: My planet textures
Interesting stuff (though I'm not generally a fan of fictional add-ons). I was wondering if you used any Earth pictures to make Sparta; it looks like a bit of South Africa is stuck in there... or am I imagining things?

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1.1 Version for Download
The criticism here has veered away from the constructive (Cham's in particular). This is a work in progress and Fridger has made clear what the limitations and priorities are at the moment. Getting things right under the hood regarding the code and the catalog should be the priority now, the paint j...

Re: New Celestia-1.4.0pre-FT1 (galaxies) for Testing
I've always liked the plots/impressions that Richard Powell does, as part of his "An Atlas of the Universe" pages. See: http://www.anzwers.org/free/universe/milkyway.html This 'artist impression' is more a schematic than anything, and probably more useful as a guide for 'template' developers than ot...

Re: Blue Supergiant In Progress
It's been a while since I was doing any physics, so I had a look at the Wikipedia. It looks like a Red supergiant and a blue supergiant are completely different beasts. The convection patterns of one probably have very little to do with the other. By blue supergiant I assume you mean a type O Ia... ...

Thanks to all involved for release, it's great to have something new to play with and this is the first time I've gone back to playing with Celestia for quite a while. Getting all nostalgic. I take it that once the code issues are sorted out, this catalog/template combo is capable of being extensive...

Re: The "oldest" Forum Guys
Well my first post was as a guest just after Fridger signed up... http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=248&highlight=ogg and I was lurking before that and ever since... guess I don't count as 'active' though. I haven't really used Celestia for over a year now, since my old laptop jus...

Is this a feature? Should it be?
I'm in an even worse position, I can't even handle 2048 textures, it's 1024 maximum for me. So I've been manually cutting the 2k ones in 4 and dropping them down a level, then resizing the 'top-level' ones. Takes ages. Question: can the zoom/proximity at which celestia 'jumps' up to the next VT leve...

Question
How many people have got these working inside the 512x512 VT? I read that these 2k tiles would replace the 512s but when I hit where they should be at level 5 all I get are big white squares. I'd thought they had to all be the same size anyway? Can anyone clear this up for me? PS I'm using jpg copie...

Re: Overlay maps for planets and major moons
This was a wonderful idea for an addon. And here's at least one who's interested in an Australasian alternative (request that there's at least some New Zealand in there though, I'm feeling homesick!) PS, am I correct in thinking that the overlays you make are compatible with using VTs as the base te...

Re: WMAP... Selden are you holding out on us?
btw: Not sure if you'd have seen this already or not, but there's a 2k rectangular projection available from the Wmap website itself, not directly but as the texture used for their VRML model (model itself only ~300k, texture is 2k by 1k jpg, about 2mb). I haven't had a good look at it for seams tho...

WMAP... Selden are you holding out on us?
All I can say is I feel teased. Selden posts (several times) a " 8O " screenshot displaying his wonderful 2dF and Redshift addons plus 'others'. One of them being the WMAP microwave background radiation. Perhaps I've completely overlooked the link to it, the forum search decided not to show me anyth...

Sigh
As an old sky3d user I love that Celestia can now do this stuff. Displaying the stuff we know... mapping the universe... brain candy instead of eye candy (though I have nothing against eye candy). Unfortunately I have the same viewing problems as the people on this thread. a) pinked-out night-side p...

it's all 3d really
Polchei, the idea that we only see the universe in 2d just sounds wrong to me anyway. It seems to assume that we only ever have a fixed perspective, which we don't. When Voyager 2 took that amazing picture of saturn side-on to the sun, that's a view of the planet that can never be seen from the eart...
