Re: Benefits of 'chase' mode?
It's interesting that you should mention this. I'm nearly finished with a complete rewrite of the observer frame code and was contemplating making this very change to chase mode, and also redefining phase lock mode to use the velocity vector as as the second frame vector. IIRC, the primary vector i...

Re: Open Source
Why People like Selden is not included and cited as part of the dev team. That's because I'm not. I'm an "advanced user." Celestia makes it possible for me finally to construct things I've dreamed about most of my life, so I tend to try to make it do things that are at the limits of its capabilitie...

Re: Open Source
The main way in which Celestia is departing from the bazaar model is on the 'release early, release often' motto, but that's mainly because we aren't that many working on it. As it has already been said by others we would all love to have a larger team, and we are open to new contributions, the pro...

Re: I think Celestia needs some serious UI help
Hank, which parts of the Celestia UI are you considering suitable for "Lua Hookification"? Which parts are you thinking would make more sense as a C++ GUI? (Qt?) As described above, my recent experiment doesn't use the Lua Hook mechanism in Celestia as such, but rather implements the main event loo...

Re: I think Celestia needs some serious UI help
The performance is an important issue. I am obsessed by performance in all my projects. I know that is wrong in principle because a software first of all has to work. Of course performance is important, but it's usually a mistake to focus on performance prematurely. In my vision I would like that c...

Re: Celestia development volunteers?
Another question is jumping in my mind continuously in this period. How the celestians wiki should be integrated in the current development process? How the official developers is supposed that will interact with this tool? In other words if we will update the roadmap, we will discuss about the imp...

I don't believe the Lua Edu Tools have had any substantial performance optimization. I ignored performance entirely in my test.

No way to have a look to this test? :P
Have you tried Vincent's Lua Edu Tools? My test looks essentially the same (as it uses the Lua Edu Tools code).

Paolo,
Why don't you go ahead and create a wiki page for this topic?

Re: I think Celestia needs some serious UI help
I still would like to see some sort of simple and effective GL UI in pure videogames style. E.g. the Stellarium one. Vincent's Lua Edu Tools uses a cross-platform GUI based on Lua and OpenGL (which are already built into Celestia). The toolkit is fairly primitive, but nicely demonstrates the possib...

Re: VS cleanup
Why in the CVS tree there are still very very old visual studio prj files? Why those files are not replaced by the current updated sln files for VS 2005? Why winlibs are not included in CVS? PLEASE! Don't say that a decent C++ programmer can get rid of those problems very quickly!!!! It's simply a ...

If this is not the proper thread to report 1.5.0pre4 bugs, please move this to the right place. I have been waiting for 1.5.0pre4 to come out so that a major bug in atmospheric lighting would be fixed. Alas ... it is still there. Re: Where is VY Canis Majoris?
One doesn't have to be a practicing physicist to understand this issue. With that I certainly agree. But you must also grant me the professional ability to judge when someone has NOT understood this physics issue and YET continues to produce "hot air" posts. This was not the first time and at some ...

Re: Where is VY Canis Majoris?
Presumably the values used would have a reasonable scientific basis, which would be clearly documented. Unlike you, Grant correctly stated: I doubt if there is a scientific approach that could generate accurate radii for red giants and supergiants without using prohibitively complex calculations. S...

Re: Where is VY Canis Majoris?
I just have no desire to do work which I know will not be well received, since Fridger is generally quite direct with his negative feedback. Re: Where is VY Canis Majoris?
It's certainly better than reporting grossly incorrect radii. I certainly agree with that. I always found it misleading that Celestia prints star radii out, based on a very primitive estimate, as if it was reading out a sophisticated data base! Celestia should say something like "estimated radius",...
