Re: The speed of light is not the fastest.
I remember seeing a documentary show where they split a beam of some sort (actually carrying music) with an apparatus which made one part of the beam go through a vacuum, and the other part through a solid bar of some sort of metal. The beam that traveled through the metal bar got to its destination...

Physical debris from oustide our Solar System?
I was just curious, is any of the debris from Out There which falls down to Earth (meteor showers, etc.) extrasolar? Is there even a way for anyone to tell? Just seems like everything I've ever heard of falling to Earth was already part of the solar system, and not from way way out or anything cool ...

Re: Feature Request: "Attract Mode"
What kind of proof is that? Proof that it's difficult to write scripts, and further proof can be found on this very board in the scripts forum. I am not complaining about anything but the some of the replies to this thread being somewhat negative on such a simple idea. I understand that other featu...

Re: Feature Request: "Attract Mode"
So, you say it's better to modify Celestia than to do some trivial(!) modifications to a few scripts? Yes, I do in fact. As far as the programming goes, considering the other features of Celestia, I would bet money that this is as trivial a code change as it could get. I don't see why you are all s...

Re: Feature Request: "Attract Mode"
after all this painful work that went into achieving arcsec orbit accuracy , it was always my "dream" that Celestia would end up as a screensaver;-) LOL Well I hope it's not too degrading that I should ask, only I don't think this idea of mine lacks merit. Let's face it, it would be pretty cool if ...

Feature Request: "Attract Mode"
Basically, it's like this: I just would like to be able to start Celestia and have it automatically enter something akin to the "attract mode" on an arcade machine. The easiest way I can think of is just to have it automatically run scripts in a random order. The other way I can think of is to have ...

How do I get scripts to loop?
I'd like an explanation for both types, if possible. I searched the forums before asking, and didn't find a satisfactory answer. Is it not possible? What'd be really boffo is just knowing how to call a script at the end of another, and chain them together, then loop the whole thing again by having t...

I don't really even know the difference. By their names, I assume that celx is some newer format that does cooler stuff? Eh, don't bother explaining, I'll look around and figure it out on my own, I know that it's probably one of the easily answered questions if I just look at the documentation.

OK so....
How tough would it be to do this manually for someone like me who doesn't normally mess with the script? I assume I can just put a bunch of these commands in at the beginning of the script after I figure out which textures are going to be viewed. Correct? No complicated learn-everything-else-there-i...

Feature Request: Smart Texture Caching
Wouldn't it be possible to make Celestia read an entire script before running it, and figure out which textures will need to be cached in order for the script to run smoothly, and cache them into memory before actually running the script? I only mention this because even on fast computers there are ...

Re: Starship Simulator Project
I sure hope it's based on the "old" Star Trek Universe and not the "new" Star Trek Universe (and I most definitely hope that anything from "Enterprise" is not included). TOS stuff just has a more dangerous feel to it than anything from the movies or later TV shows (except for a few things from the 7...

Info for newbies
I'm sure that everyone who's commented so far already knows about this, but in case any newbies walk in and read this thread, I'll point something out that anyone using Celestia should know: Celestia uses the OpenGL API for its 3D acceleration. The performance of Celestia depends not only on the qua...

It's probably all ATI's problem
Any difficulties that ATI has rendering Celestia stuff I assume to be the fault of ATI, since Celestia is programmed in OpenGL (which nvidia still stomps all over ATI in). Chris, since apparently you're an employee of nvidia (which I didn't know), can you tell me anything about ATI and how it was ev...

Re: A few ideas for the educational aspect of Celestia
Now you've got me/us curious. What age are you? :?: Frank Heh, I'm in my early 30s. The reason that Celestia is so fantastic to me is because I'm old enough to remember when there were no personal computers and certainly no publicly available astronomical software. The best one could hope for back ...

Sorry, I'm not a teacher :(
I'm more of an armchair student. I would probably just look at lessons posted on the internet for the sake of educating myself, and because I like the very idea of the existence of this program. It's hard to explain, but for a person my age at least, it's a simply fantastic idea that Celestia even e...

A few ideas for the educational aspect of Celestia
Just brainstorming again, like I tend to do ;) 1. Would it be possible, for the benefit of lesson planning with Celestia, for people writing scripts to be able to make "tooltip" type paragraphs that pop up automatically or at the press of a particular key, for any astronomical object, area or event ...

idea for an ambitious modeler from a complete non-modeler
Someone whip up a system around Zeta 2 Reticuli, add planet LV426 from Alien, and add an alien model (the one Ripley blew out the airlock in the first movie) or two (hey, she blew another out in the 2nd movie too, she was good like that) orbiting the planet. I don't actually expect that anyone will ...

I got to thinking after reading t00fri's idea
His "Conformal Mapping of the Entire Universe" idea. Basically, what we can see in celestia is only what is seen in the visible range of light in real life, is it not? Is there any need or desire for some sort of view mode which allows you to view things in different bandwidths? Like "infrared mode"...

Bookmark Locations independent of time?
I'd like to be able to bookmark a location on Earth and have it take me to the same place (relative to Earth) without changing the time back to when I bookmarked it. Is this possible?

Thanks for replying
Heh the post was here for a day or two, empty. I was afraid my ideas were so ludicrous that people didn't bother replying because they thought they were just completely stupid. Maybe they are, maybe they're not.
What about the idea of using animated textures?
What about cloud VT textures?
