Here's another one... Nice what a few clicks can produce
Right Click me and Save As (This is about 2.2meg)

Success!
Managed to finalise the script/program to build/render images of the UK from a certain online source *cough*. For example, with just 3-4 clicks of a mouse, you can build this JPG image:- BEWARE: This is a somewhat large example 6 meg!! Probably best to Right Click and "Save As". Right Click me and S...

Re: Trying to help Jestr - Need program to clip JPGs
I suggest you install either NetPBM or ImageMagick or both. Here are some sample NetPBM commands: # cut out an appropriate region of a jpeg image # convert from JPEG to PPM format as required by NetPBM jpegtopnm big.jpg >tmp1.ppm # cut out region pnmcut -top 5 -height 128 -left 4 -width 256 tmp1.pp...

Trying to help Jestr - Need program to clip JPGs
Looking to help Jestr with something... Is anyone aware of a straight forward program simply to clip JPGs? It would have to be dos or command line ideally, and could also do wildcards. eg: jpgclip *.jpg 500 300 (clip all jpg files in directory to 500x300) Anyone aware of such a program? I've done a ...

Besides Linux/Unix, the script also runs in a current Cygwin installation under Windows, ( http://www.cygwin.com ). If the z-shell ('zsh') is unavailable, it also may be executed with the 'bash' shell, by replacing #! /usr/bin/zsh by #! /bin/bash in the first line. The script assume...

Re: Massive textures are they worth it? Are bump maps better?
Couple of problems here:- a) Cannot find any (16K) textures by "Mario". b) I have Photoshop and Painshop pro. Can these "offset the texture by width/2". What does this actually mean in English? c) Regarding your "virtualtex", is there any documentation/examples? I've searched the forum and the only ...

Re: Massive textures are they worth it? Are bump maps better?
In my defense though, exhibit (a) and (b):- (a) uses less than 3meg (b) uses nearly on 300meg NeilF, you discovered one important thing in your studies: There are 300 Meg textures that are done worse and thus deliver worse than other people's 3Meg ones! On motherlode and elsewhere on the net you ma...

NeilF, please do not forget that the more experienced users of this forum are used to completely different levels of detail than what you display above to underlign your point. I have posted in the other thread a number of really hires Mars images (that you chose to ignore!) . http://www.shatters.n...

Re: OK noob help required adding Mars CTX and PNGs...
I dont know which texture on the Motherlode you are on about, and I dont know if a normalmap will run any different to a bump map,but a VT will work on more limited machines (which couldnt load for example an 8k texture all in one piece).DDS textures will run the smoothest of all if your machine can...

Re: OK noob help required adding Mars CTX and PNGs...
He is on about using a Normal map Virtual Texture-using any Virtual Texture (VT) means that ,for example a 16k texture is cut up into smaller pieces (usually 512pixels or 1024pixels) which makes it a lot easier on your computer,Jestr OK... So in the case of Mars for example, the only download in th...

Re: Massive textures are they worth it? Are bump maps better?
Sorry but after reading again and again I give up. I don't know how you got the idea that a better resolution of textures doesn't show more detail. In an ideal world you'd use the highest of everything... But... Here... Choose yourself... http://www.hvweb.co.uk/fawcettn/celestia/enhanced1.jpg http:...

Re: Massive textures are they worth it? Are bump maps better?
Thanks for the reply. Your post is very interesting. Looking at the coast lines I can see your point. However, such features are rather rare throughout the solar system. If we look at Mars again, generally there is very little difference between using a 128k texture or a 283meg texture with a reason...

Massive textures are they worth it? Are bump maps better?
Being new to this game, this all a big learning experience for me. My initial reaction to get the best image of Mars was to download the best images (textures) I could for it under the impression this would surely give me the best image. Well judge for yourselves. Below is a combination of the stand...

Re: How do you add a cloud PNG?
Until you get right down to the surface. My guess is that the shading provided by your bumpmap is limiting what you can see in your high resolution closeups. Specular, bump and surface texture maps all really need to be the same resolution. This is quite interesting... I'll start a new thread for t...

Re: How do you add a cloud PNG?
That's a 4K texture. You have an ATI card. ATI cards have at most a 2K texture buffer. Moving cloud textures have to fit into the card's texture buffer. You'll have to use a graphics utility to scale the image down to 2Kx1K. For stationary textures that will be pasted onto spheres, Celestia can cut...
