Re: VT: Present and Future
Alan might be willing to put those reorganized archives on the NASA site. Of course, whoever wants to do that should contact Alan first to find out if it's possible. That'd be great. All we'd have to do is "choose" among the VT textures out there which are the best to set as "standard" VT textures....

VT: Present and Future
First, i'd like to congratulate Chris and all of you who helped for v1.3.1, amazing stuff. Onto business: although i first tried VirtualTextures a month ago it wasn't until this last weekend that i really got into it. I wanted to download the highest resolution VT and see how my video card (GF4 Ti42...

Re: problem with the forum's time
P2P software can a be a real nightmare, they can bring down any low-mid speed link. , i don't know the real topology of the network where this server is located but i assume this server is behind a *DSL router. I'd suggest they would use the Linux box as a router for the whole network and turn on so...

Re: Help with large moon texture, please
Sorry for the bitter dose of reality but i'm afraid a texture that big won't work (properly) on your video card. You should avoid textures bigger than your VC memory (a bit less actually) or frame rate will slow down to a crawl. Regarding texture folders: you could start copying the texture to the h...

Re: OpenUniverse
That's weird, i don't update OU anymore but the site is still up. I guess the DNS went SNAFU. Anyways, try this alternate URL: http://www1.openuniverse.org/ Why did we cease OU development? Well, quite a few reasons but mainly lack of time. I don't have so much spare time since a couple of years ago...

Wow, nice picture aaron. Besides slightly different colors on Saturn clouds and the brighter moons they look almost identical.

OT: Cassini takes first picture of Saturn
The probe is still 20 months away from its target but a few days ago took this picture of Saturn and Titan: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/saturn/saturn_110102_browse.jpg More details here: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/releases/2002/release_2002_202.cfm Can't wait for July 2004. Re: convert bmf to 3ds?
Ok, i've found it. Don't expect too much , it's a modified version (mostly mesh optimizations) of a model i found somewhere (i'm sorry but i don't remember where  ) http://www1.openuniverse.org/shuttle.rar Sorry dude but i'm afraid there'll be no more OU releases ever. I don't think it's...

If you're interested i think i still have the original 3DS i converted to BMF somewhere in my HD. Anyway, i think you should be able to find quite a few Shuttle 3DS models over the net.

Well, forget about the heaven, hell seems much more interesting to me
Seriously, you're right. The sky looks much better, higher rez, Nx antialiased and it doesn't need a GF4. Too bad you can't turn off the cloud layer though

Re: resolution idea
Of course it would be cool but i'll tell you why it's not a great idea: -Bandwidth: As you are approaching a planet you'd have to be constantly uploading new textures to the graphics card. And this is slow, you'd have a hard time getting decent framerates. Same would happen with a rotating planet (f...

Re: MMX, SSE, 3DNOW!
When you are using a HUGE stars database SSE/3DNow can really make the difference. I think it would be pretty useful to simulate the asteroid belt too. Every clock cycle counts when you're dealing with thousands of objects.

NVIDIA's OpenGL 1.4
Yesterday i saw NVIDIA released a few weeks ago Detonator 40.41 Beta. Apparently these drivers feature OpenGL 1.4 (along with a claimed up to 25% increase in performance). I decided to give it a try (on my GeForce1 DDR) but unfortunately Celestia don't work properly. All textures and polys are messe...

Re: Do you want lens flares in Celestia ?
A simple case that comes to my mind: -When a very bright light source (say the sun) is in your field of vision and you're looking with your eyes almost closed, the eyelashes will scatter some light and produce an effect quite similar to regular lens flares. Same could happen if you wear dirty glasse...

Isn't it due to imperfect optics?
True, but i got some news for you. Your eyes aren't perfect. Sure, they have high quality optics but not perfect, under some circunstances you'll still be able to "see" lens flares.

Re: DDS-16k texture is great !!!
Well, even with JPG and PNG (or whatever) you can let the driver compress the images on the fly and upload the compressed one to video card memory. Once the texture has been upload there's no diff in performance between the native DDS image and the "compressed on-the-fly" one. The BIG difference is ...
