Missing planet textures in Gnome (Ubuntu)

featureless planets (Gnome Celestia)

I use Gnome Celestia (for Ubuntu Linux) with and 7950 Nividia graphics card, driver version 180. I have all of Celestia's features turned on. When I look at a planet (expect for Earth ironically) all I see is a featureless sphere. For instance Mars is just pinkish red with no surface features. Jupit...

I'm using GLUT. I really didn't know what I was doing when I installed it.Can I uninstall GLUT and in install the GNOME front end? How do I do this?

Linux version question

I recently downloaded Celestia to use on Ubuntu. I don't see a command menu bar at the top as there is in the Windows version. Is the Linux version only driven by keyboard commands?
