Re: Naughty file
Hrm, I do the same, but haven't seen this behavior (using through HDR4632-celestia), maybe this is something with the newer releases. You may want to double-check the properties of the shortcut to ensure the "Start in:" field references your Celestia directory.

Re: Do satellites cast shadows on rings?
Um Hungry4info, what do you mean by "can't"? I'm fairly sure that it could be, and I think the request likely lines up with some of the thinking Chris has been putting into a more uniform lighting model though I'm unsure there. Hopefully one of the more involved developers can chime in.

Thanks Don, this sounds interesting.

Since you seem to have moved over to http://www.celestialmatters.org you may want to update the link in your opening post.

Ah I get it...

AltSurface and alpha embedded Specular
When I use AltSurface I no longer see speculars, which do show when the same texture is used in the standard object definition. Specifically the "NormalEx9" surface does display the alternate normal map, but Earth then has no speculars. Modify "Earth" "Sol" { Texture &q...

Re: Motherlode Peer Group Review
I though he had some time ago. Of course Selden also provides them on his site . Kolano, since 'SDSS DR2 Galaxies' is a data plot add-on you have to look at the 'Extrasolar: Data Plots'-section: http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/dataplots.php His add-on is available there since 2004-11-04! ...

HDR4392 Orbit Issue
I'm seeing an issue in the HDR4392 version of Celestia. When orbits are turned on an odd shimmering occurs down the lengths of them, this is hard to see in still screenshots, but more apparent when animated. Using higher contrast highlights the problem though, which is seen as the odd glowing patche...

Re: Motherlode Peer Group Review
If Selden had wished to upload his add-ons though, I'm certain that he would have done this already. I thought he had some time ago. Of course Selden also provides them on his site . My Sloan DR2 and IRAS galaxy addons probably should be considered obsolete, although not critically so: they ...

Re: Motherlode Peer Group Review
Thanks very much for the calm, rational answer to a question. No, Bob, thank you, for taking the time to ask. One other thing, part of your concern seemed to be lacking content for the galaxies section. Is there a reason not to add Selden's galaxy survey add-ons there? They work with current...

Re: Motherlode Peer Group Review
Well, here's another way to start a flame war on the forum I suppose... Is there any reason to keep the Galaxies portion of the ML in existence? From what I have looked at recently, only Frank's Ultra Deep Field add-on looks as if it can be used any more with the latest releases of Celestia....

Re: Motherlode Peer Group Review
Ulrich, even if the "last modified date" gives information on what has been modified (from the full addon itself to a single word in the readme.txt file), I think that the revisions are many times due to “side” changes (I mean not the body addon itself, but mainly it's explanation, or lic...

Re: Really High-Res texture for earth?
Perso I have now a 64k color/normal/spec + 32k cloud/night in my hires folder, then the 4 first folders of the same VT set duplicated in my medres folder to have a 8k VT in medres resolution and the 2 first folders again in the lowres folder to get a 2k VT in lowres. This is a bit of HD waste (same...

Question for those suggesting the use of the Nvidia Control Panel to enable AA.
Doesn't this result in all the fonts in Celestia being oddly cropped?

Re: Something nice!
The exercise is quite interesting and reveal here some strangeness in the placement of the pieces of the puzzle depending on the dtae I imagine this may happen often, particularly in objects mapped in a piecemeal a manner. To get the mappings precise one needs to have a good understanding of... a) ...

I'm very excited regarding this possibility, though I fear it would cause an explosion in size of my already large extras folder. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
BTW, something like this probably lines up nicely with the Object Timeline proposal from the Developer Talk section

Re: Is Amalthea considered a minor moon?
Without a strict definition/guidelines of what classifies something as a minor moon vs a moon, disagreements over which is which seem inevitable. If it's something particular to Celestia, I think even a strict definition will be prone to constant attack. Since the only guidance provided thus far see...

Re: Celestia 1.5.1rc2
Version 1.3.2 was released in 2004 and is 12,234,628 bytes. Version 1.5.1rc3 is 23,790,082 bytes just less than 2x as big. In computing terms a 2x increase over 4 years doesn't seem that significant. Even on dial-up, 24mb doesn't seem like an unreasonable size.

Re: Opinions: dwarf planets and minor moons
⋅ While the existing data files may contradict this, I'd personally like to define "minor-moon" as a moon without an official name (i.e. numbered moons). That may provide a more concrete definition than currently proposed. ⋅ Regarding orbit color, I feel moons/minor mo...
