Point of origin
But wouldn't the center of the Universe exist at the point where the Big Bang originated? That's assuming the Big Bang originated at a "point" in 3-dimensional space at all, which cosmological theory says it didn't... If everything in the universe is expanding outward, wouldn't the logical solution...

Center vs origin
It is located in the past and has no meaning today except that most points in the universe are nearly equally distant in time from the center of the universe. All points are equally distant in space (zero spatial distance.) If we consider time to be one of the dimensions used to measure the univers...

Re: Center of the Universe
I think this is more of a question than a discussion but Im deeply interested in others insight to the question where would the center of the universe lie? When the Earth was still believed to be flat, certain cultures depicted the city of Jerusalem at the center of most "world maps" of the time. N...

Spamming
I'm afraid that until we can start to lock these spammers and hackers and data thiefs up and throw away the key we will continue to have all these problems. On the contrary, singling out a few misbehaving individuals and making an example of them by awarding them ridiculously harsh prison sentences...

Re: Enceladus Flyby: March 9, 9:08:00 UTC, 500 Km!
However the closest distance is incorrect by about a factor of two: ~1200 km instead of 500 km. I've been playing around with Saturn's orbit and noticed a discrepancy in position of up to 4,000 km between Celestia's "vsop87-saturn" and a Sun-centered XYZ plot (1-day steps) for Saturn generated by J...

Re: Security overkill
Well, look forward to the day micropayments becomes practical - i.e. one-click. That??s all it will take... One penny to register for life: nothing to an individual, but absolutely prohibitively expensive for a spammer bot... Why would it be expensive to the spammers ? They already know how to dist...

But spamming is, and it's a game I hate to lose. That was a form letter, and their Hosteurope GmbH network (80.237.130.0/24) is now a candidate for blacklisting. Not that anybody seems to care...

Not a bug: AscendingNode definition problem
Do a search for postings by Grant Hutchison. Thanks for the hint; I suppose you are referring to this thread from last October . Ok, good to know it's not a bug then. However, it means Horizons' data (elements as well as XYZ plots) have to be processed further before they can be used in Celestia. I...

AscendingNode definition problem
According to Chris in Selden's Celestia notes : "The origin is the center of the parent object, whether it's a star or a planet. If the parent is a planet, the +z axis is the planet's north pole and the xy plane is the planet's equatorial plane at the reference epoch J2000. The x axis points at the ...

Multiuser environments
This may be a non-issue for people compiling & installing Celestia themselves, but it can be a problem if Celestia comes preinstalled. You really shouldn't need root just to install Addons. Would Fridger's suggested workaround (tweaking installation parameters by means of ./configure) solve the...

Scientifically correct simulation
Yeah, Doppler effect would be great! Imagine a blue Mars fillng your screen as you come closer, or a deep red Earth as you move away! And what color should those planets be when using travel speeds above that of light? If you want Celestia to properly simulate everything in accordance with the laws...

Re: System vs user files
Also under Linux, making ample use of symbolic links avoids largely to deposit multiple copies an the HD... I know, but I regard that as a kludge to simulate a full software installation in the user's directory, when the software is clearly not aware of the system/user file distinction. I have used...

System vs user files
It is expected that Celestia will be installed in the user's directory, not in a system directory, so all configuration and catalog files are editable. I feel rather old reading this, as I began using Unix when personal computers were still mostly regarded as toys in comparison (1982). To me, a dec...

Cloud shadows
Speaking of shadows in Saturn's atmosphere, Cassini has photographed shadows cast by the cloudtops themselves near the terminator (where the Sun is barely above the horizon), indicating the threedimensional structure of the clouds.

Blacklists
Does phpBB support blacklisting of clients based on their IP address? If so, there ought to be some public (DNS-based) blacklist that could be employed (perhaps in addition to other measures), similar to MAPS RBL and other lists used to protect e-mail servers.

It looks more like a canyon to me, to the right in this image (W00004830, taken 02/17/2005 03:03 UTC) if I'm not entirely mistaken about its location.

Overexposed Enceladus
http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/raw/raw-images-details.cfm?feiImageID=32339 Another very cool image. I think the overexposed bit on the right is lit by sunlight, and the crescent on the left is Saturnshine? (Saturn's in the background). It's Saturnshine on the left, but the background ...

Web page design
No need ot credit, this is not co-design. However, thank you! for considering centreing the web page. A lot of sites leave the page shoved to the left side, which makes users lean over. It's bad for the back! Eh? Now that's a weird argument for centering the page contents that I hadn't seen before....

Colliding galaxies
I think it is pretty certain that they are going to collide one day. If they did get into a closed orbit they would probably end up spiraling into each other anyway. Without knowing in what direction the Andromeda Galaxy is moving, it's impossible to tell how close it will get. All we can tell from...

Security overkill
So that's why they have those distorted number security codes on certain forums. Could this be implemented into the Celestia forums? While every forum could implement it, I'm not sure we'd want them to. Optical character recognition (OCR) involves no magic, just a little image analysis, and if thos...
