Re: I'm having a problem with Pluto's orbit

Ok, but it's interesting that the two orbits (Pluto and Pluto-Charon) don't come anywhere CLOSE to alignment.

Re: I'm having a problem with Pluto's orbit

I think I'm narrowing in on the problem, and it seems to be with Jestr's New Horizons add-on, which includes a new Pluto and Charon and new ssc files. I installed Jestr's add-on using the instructions that came with it, and I moved the jpleph.dat file to the Celestia>data folder as instructed. Now w...

I'm having a problem with Pluto's orbit

I'm not sure which of my many addons did this, but Pluto's orbit isn't showing correctly. Anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

Would it improve the situation by running dual 8800 GTX cards in SLI mode? Can this even be done with Celestia with any benefit?

Re: spacecraft orientation

That reminds me of a related question that was discussed eons ago (before the latest improvements to Celestia's model orientation capability). Have the Pioneer models been updated so that the main antenna remain pointed at the Earth? If not, can that now be done??

Thanks

Re: 8800 GS or 9600 GT?

I am wondering if someone would be so kind as to give a brief explanation of the Nvidia card numbers, specifically the differences between the "GS", the "GT" and the "GTX." I see these card number extensions and I'm not sure what exactly they mean. Maybe the answer to t...

Re: Combining Celestia and Stellarium?

In addition to showing the lat and long of where you are, you would also have to be able to enter a specific lat and long that you type in -- define your location and Celestia would put you there. Also, to use Celestia as a planitarium, it would have to include such things as nebula, clusters, etc. ...

Re: Voyager 1 is now 100 AU from the sun!

The intrepid Voyager 1 spacecraft has reached 100 AU from the sun. It took the speed demon spacecraft under 29 years to get this far! Compare that to 35 years it will take for Voyager 2 and "a snails pace" 46 years it will take for slowpoke Pioneer 11 to reach 100 AU! How long will it take the New ...

Re: Add-On / Extras Objects Not Selectable

When objects are in another stellar system, you first must select the star that they're orbiting. Then you can select the objects that are in that star system. I wonder if that's why I wasn't able to navigate to the M4 cluster by typing "M4." I dropped the entire M4 folder into my extras folder and...

Re: question concerning educational extras

Ghaleon, I'm going to assume that what you're asking is, "Can I leave the educational activities config file as my default configuration, and add some new addons and textures to it -- perhaps from my old installation?" You can easily leave the educational activities celestia.cfg file as your default...

This is just a very tiny-brained interruption into a very interesting thread... You brainiacs are providing a TON of value to Celestia, and you're to be commended. We simpletons are humbled and delighted by your hard work!! However, this thread -- seems to me -- probably belongs over in the Celestia...

Re: Future Development suggestion.

Excuse me for being a complete bonehead on this (I'm NOT a software writer!), but could it be possible to create a small application that allows the user to select which add-ons he wants to load, and when he presses the commit button it re-writes the celestia.cfg file (and launches Celestia) to only...

Re: Future Development suggestion.

I can't help but chirp in here. I think it's becoming clear to some of us "add-on gluttons" that Celestia will bring even the most RAM and disk happy machines to their knees eventually. The more add-ons you install, the closer you get to the limit of any machine. Is there anything on the horizon tha...

Re: add-ons spoils the unknown

Well, one idea is that you could download and install ALL of Frank Gregorio's wonderful Educational Activities for Celestia. This will give you a boatlode of add-ons that you know nothing about -- many of them are the best of the best add-ons available for Celestia. Then go exploring.

Re: How do photons work?

Thanks guys. Yes, you both have helped. If it was possible for a star to blink on only long enough to send out one spherical shell of photons in all directions, where all of the propogating photons are always equal distance from the source, I would expect that at a billion light years away I may or ...

Re: How do photons work?

Yes and no :) A photon is both a wave and a particle. The electrical and magnetic waves of an individual photon spread out in all directions, but the individual photon can be detected in only one location. Thanks, Selden, but you're confusing me (not that I doubt you!). If a photon can only be dete...

Re: How do photons work?

Regarding your first question: Yes... But. The energy in a photon can not be devided for ever. There is a minimum amount of energy per photon because of quantum mechanics. So, if the energy in a photon can't be divided forever, then the waves eventually spread over a large enough area as to be virt...

Re: How do photons work?

They don?€™t converge (the optics within the telescope focuse light into a more condensed image). What you are seeing is a collection of photons that have nearly identical paths though space. This is because that light travels in a strait line unless affected by gravity or scattered by another obje...
